Dionne Warwick not convinced that Beyonce is a classic or iconic artist with a classic catalogue

Beyoncé got singles but she ain’t really got no great album, which is why I’d never put her on that level cuz most legendary artist got at least 5 great albums

I like B’Day a lot tho

She's right. Dionne came from the era where talent carried you and the people had to feel you as they made you. There was no hype machine or extra shyt. Just her voice and the music. Beyonce needed a whole lot of extra shyt besides her average singing to get her where she's at. Talent didn't get Beyonce to the top.

And yeah, Beyonce might be remembered but her music won't.

The problem with Warwicks position is that she's looking at it through the eyes of HER generation. The majority of Beyonce fans in 2019 do not relate to them. You play some classic Warwick songs for those fans today, and many will give you the :russell:. I understand where she's coming from, but it's really subjective. The fans are different. Lets be real...Bey has songs that would be considered more sophisticated and more comparable to a Warwick song, but that's not what the fans want overall.

I'm several decades younger than Stevie Wonder & Donny Hathaway, yet I still love there songs. You shouldn't have to look through the eyes of a specific generation to have a song penetrate. The vast majority of mainstream r&b lacks soul, originality or somewhat decent lyrics...or a combination of all three.

Nobody hates beyonce but let's keep it real, her era is pretty weak, that's why she always gets this pushback. Rihanna isn't real competition, it's so pathetic.

But based on that logic she hasn’t been given a fair amount of time for subsequent generations to appreciate her work as you appreciate Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway. That portion of her legacy is still TBD.
