Anyone who says this is generic and whats being done today? really like this doesnt sound unique to whats on radio?
It has an Uptown / Badboy aura, the production is classic Stevie J, Mario Winans infused, not the singles they did on hiphop but those 112, Faith, Total, Carl Thomas cuts that have no video or radio play.
Puff only rapped on 6 out of 23 tracks. 5 tracks are interludes for the vibe. Much of what is being presented is for feeling / soul.
Got to give props that he didnt completely go and try to do a last train (which was ahead of its time and not appreciated until years after its release) or a press play and just spit or get rap featured for each track. He stuck to the mission of staying in the rnb category.
There was so many landmines to this that he avoided:
1- Puff u rap on each track
2- Puff this sounds outdated
3- Puff ur chasing a club joint / hit that dont fit w cohesion
4- Puff ur trying to buy wants hot or imitate whats hot
5- Puff ur missing a big, mase, lox or faith cameo
His usual recipes for a badboy album were avoided because he focused on this being purely RnB driven and Love Records move even though there's sprinkles of the badboy sound throughout.
It sounds fresh for whats out today and can compete. Even the joint w bieber he didnt make him do the typical bieber style radio records, he challenged artists to step out their lane and do it the puff way.
