Ian didn't know the overall fate of what was going to happen.

In the context of the movie, he was just randomly asking a woman to make a baby before even asking her out on a date.

It was random as hell.

His other super corny line, "Meeting the aliens wasn't as amazing as meeting you," got a lot of groans too.
in the context of the movie it wasn't random, they had already gone through this crazy first contact alien experience together before he asked her if she wanted to make a baby. They had already formed their bond and connection, so it's not like he had just met her and was already asking that.

And don't forget again... the question was asked in the FUTURE... she was simultaneously visualizing him asking that question at the same time him confessing his love to her at the present day and when they have their child and witnessing her grow off in the more distant future. She was seeing different levels of the future.... making it easier for her to embrace what's to come.

I heard some people on podcasts complaining about the big Sci fi movies of the past few years all having to do with children (Gravity, Interstellar, this) :heh:

It's because they're chickifying scifyi to hook in women. The idea is make sci-fi female centric and get both men and women to show up.

Saw it yesterday and what annoys me was they turned the whole experience into a Lifetime movie. She's got this great gift and we get some cheesy scene with the Chinese general and the rest of the movie with "flashbacks" with her daughter. Like nothing else would have been more important to show than getting the power she gets.

She was quite clearly suffering from depression.

No, she was an absorbed person. Remember the 1st day she has no clue why there are only a few people in class. She blows off the whole thing with her mom on the phone and goes back to work like nothing doing.

He was a socially awkward nerd that admitted he was alone because he struggled with communication. It's not far-fetched that he would say something dumb like that in the spur of the moment in a romantic situation.

He may have said that but that's not how his character acted ever through the whole movie which is why people hated the line

Not an Amy Adams fan but I really connected with her character in this one. The scene with the Chinese general was incredibly shot. Very engaging film. Going to see Nocturnal Animals tomorrow.
Did you see it?

Self absorption is closely tied to depression, breh.

Had a spark but I wasn't feeling it overall, the international tension was a little contrived

I give it a c-

But one thought I had is what if the aliens are actually humans from 3000 years in the future, if you notice the knuckles of the aliens look mighty human
