The aliens need the humans help in 3000 years so we don't know what they want, they helped humans by forcing them to unite.

The aliens, who were simultaneously getting slaughtered by an unknown phenom in their future needed mankind to unite as one because only they can defeat this phenom....the only way in doing so is have them unlock the universal language code which opens up the door of time and space.... it's heavily implied that in 18 months of that "present" time on Earth (the scene where the Chinese general thanked Louise) that mankind would save the aliens of 3000 years and that's because they mastered understanding how to break thru time and space.

Like I get its fun to hate on Interstellar, but the docking scene had more tension than the entirety of Arrival and there was better acting by side characters in Interstellar than Arrival's lead.

Another thing I thought was odd was the fact in the beginning when they found out the aliens landed....she went to the college the next day assuming classes would be in session....

Disagree, considering the context of KNOWING, not just knowing that he was going to ask that, but knowing the overall fate of what is going to happen.... that question is made in parallel to her asking the question of if you know how your life would end up would you accept it.

Maybe it was the delivery but myself and most people in the theater audibly chuckled at it
