"Who's the little girl, I don't understand..."

:mindblown:

It's her future daughter. When she learned the alien language it rewired her brain so she could perceive time non-linearly. So she now knows she is going to have a daughter that will eventually die of cancer. But she decides to go through with it anyway, knowing how it will end.

For those that have seen the film. I went to a shytty theater last night because it was the only one I could get to that late so I think I might have misunderstood an important line of dialogue.

Did the aliens say that in 3,000 years they would need humanities help? Or were they saying that in 3000 years humanity will need this language to help themselves? I'm planning to go see the movie again in Imax but this bit has been a splinter in my mind today. If the aliens need humanities help, anyone have any idea why?

The first.

It is never explained but the assumption would be that, much like the aliens offering us their universal language, a united humanity will one day be able to offer something of great importance back.

Plotwise it simply serves as a reason for the aliens to come here, not because they are a bunch of good Samaritans who just care about humanity so much, but because one day they will literally need us.

It's a small but very important distinction in their motivation.

I'm referring to the twist.

The aliens gave her and the rest of humanity a "gift" which is by breaking their language will unlock them to be suspended from time making you able to simultaneously see your past, present, and future all at once. It was how she knew what the Chinese general's wife's dying words because the general while thanking her in the future told her what it was. The end showed her seeing everything coming full circle (no pun intended) with Ian falling in love with her, Ian wanting a baby with her, and watching her daughter.... she knew what her fate would be with Ian leaving her and her daughter dying but she chose to accept it because it's already set simultaneously.

The aliens were 5th dimensional beings (like in Interstellar), so everything in regards of TIME has no present, past, or future... it's all simultaneous. Hence their language is what it is. In their distant future they knew that humans would come through and help their species, but for that to happen, they need to understand their language and break past man's three dimensional mentality. Therefore, their language was a "gift" to them so they can be able to use it to communicate with them in their future. From my take, and this is just my personal opinion, I think the aliens felt that their language can bring world peace as miscommunication being the problem between nations (as implied throughout the film).
