Bad teams say this every year because they need to justify picking high. OKC can’t go into every draft thinking this is the year to grab someone because every year will feel like that.
Now if Shai is good enough to have OKC as a play-in team, then that’s progress.
And let’s be real. He got shelved once.
You're right that bad teams can't/shouldn't do this shyt yearly (although some try to Hinkie it and I don't think it ever really works out for the GM). But I think this year seems like one of those seasons where teams are looking at the draft class and giving tanking more consideration. It doesn't happen often, but sometimes a prospect or a class gets the scout people hype and tanking seems more palpable. Zion and RJ's class was one, Luka had euro-fans talking for years before his draft class, and I think this is one of those classes too with Wembanyama and Scoot at the top of a strong group (I'm hella curious about the Thompson twins).
I do think they'll try to win early, but SGA would be the trade deadline name if they're still in limbo. Giddey and Bazley are the guys I picture helping decide which direction. SGA can't carry a bad team to a play-in, but if those two kids take leaps then I think OKC can at least challenge for a play-in slot.
