Of course they're a target come the playoffs. The question is can they get enough stops to win games with their offense. I think that's possible thanks to the big men anchoring the defense.

It's not "ignore the small size" it's "don't ignore everything else." And I'm not just talking about the dynamics they add to an offense. The descending contract structures, the likelihood of multiple trade chips remaining, and the fact that this team's core will be almost entirely 25 or younger are considerations we should include in the equation. I'm not stressing playoff defense. Thibs can either figure that out or Rose'll have to make more moves. Having Mitchell, Brunson, RJ, Mitch, and hopefully Obi might not be a contender. But it's a core with a lot of time to develop, tweak, or build off.
still don’t like it. I also don’t think the Knicks FO likes it either.

The rumors they don’t want to pay to much, and are looking as Westbrook as a trade partner to make cap space to me screams the FO is trying to decide between talent and fit.

A realer conversation is…. They trade for Mitchell because they will rebuild the team around him. Like the only guys I would say keep is RJ and Grimes and Maybe Obi. That’s how out of sync this roster is with adding a player like Mitchell.

As constructed now this team is a superstar wing away from being contenders. A lot of teams can say that, but that is legit the spot with the most impact could be felt. Its not built for Mitchell and it’s going to take a few seasons to reconfigure it to fit him. Which would be fine but if Ainge gets what he wants those struggle seasons help Utah not NY.

Quentin Grimes should not be impeding any potential trade.

It’s a win if Grimes and Reddish get traded over Obi and Quickley.

Like I said I don’t think this trade is happening.

The media keeps saying it’s a thing they will come back to but it sounds like they broken off trade talks….

Zion has a good squad in New Orleans he ain’t going nowhere.

Mitchell is as good as it gets.

The next guy that may become available is KAT.
🙂

Also thats, not the case for sure, he could still want out in 2 years.

Mitchell is just not as good. KAT is soft and plays no defense.

Let's just wait. Zion, RJ, 3rd option Quickley is better in a couple of years.

I kinda feel like the rumors show the opposite tbh. The aggressive offer and becoming a focal point early makes me think that the front office was posturing for this possibility for a while. Leon Rose has been conservative as a gm almost to a fault up until now. But he made a firm offer this time. I don't think he'll let Ainge rob him though.

The one player that definitely doesn't fit is Julius Randle. He's also the player linked in those Westbrook talks. For the rest, I think it's a matter of seeing who fits and who doesn't. Then they'll start reconfiguring things around Mitchell and RJ...hopefully Obi too. It's a good enough team to make the playoffs, and all the key guys are young. That's a good situation to be in going forward.

This is the problem with Barrett… they needed him to be that guy and he’s not. He’ll be a decent pro but he’s not gonna break out to be a top 10-15 player in the NBA which is what the Knicks need to be a legit contender

I agree. Brunson, Toppin, Grimes, Duece and Q are the legit guys that you can build with. They can wait for another legit frustrated player or just someone like a Mikal Bridges or SGA while making the 6th, 7th or 8th seed and developing what they have like goldenstate then comeback to the drawing board.

This team as it is right now, if Randle is not playing, could make the playoffs.

I disagree this team is currently 2 moves away at best.

Kat stepped up his defensive game this season, which is why he got that All Third Team nod. Not a complete liability on defense unlike previous years.
