Even with a lesser package ain't nobody gonna be able to top what NY will offer. Unless the Jazz finds someone to drive up the price I feel like we'll only have to come up off one of the younger players.

Question is, who should it be? Grimes, Quick or Obi?
Y’all really want a Mitchell and Brunson backcourt?

Despite the small backcourt the Knicks should still have at least an average to above average regular season defense under Thibs.

Also it’s not like Brunson and Mitchell are playing all 48 minutes together. They would be staggered.

What the Knicks will have is 48 minutes of rim protection with Robinson and Hartenstein.

That's the big part of this. Thibs' defenses always build from rim protection out. He won't build a world-beating defense, but league average is attainable and even they're a touch below that it's probably okay. The offense will get a significant bump from these two jumping into the top of the ball-handler rotation.

Thibs isn’t a miracle maker…. He put Burks at pg because we was a better defender than Kemba. I don’t see how you think he is going to make a small backcourt work?

This is the same guy who lowkey had issues hiding Fournier and Randle and until this rumor started we were all pretty sure Grimes was going to take Fournier’s place.
The small backcourt only has to work in spells. For any issues we bring up about last season, the bottom line is that the team finished with a slightly above-average defense by most measures. That's despite Randle's defensive play falling off a cliff, Nerlens Noel being out all year, Kemba starting 37 games, and everything else we were frustrated with.

Mitchell and Brunson aren't good defenders, but they're not Kemba bad. It may take longer than we like for Thibs to adjust, but he'll sort the rotation out. I have a lot more faith in Thibodeau to figure out ways to make a cohesive defense than I do for him to work magic with a broken offense. Giving him players that can make up for his predictable offensive scheme is crucial.

For the record, I was on board with trading for Murray too. I was willing to overlook his sketchy jumper and hope that it improves. We can't afford to scoff at a 25 or younger player with proven allstar ability. Get the kid and just be sure you've got enough resources to make a move or two once you figure out what definitely needs to be fixed. The window to try and line something up for the cap jump in a couple of years will close soon.

Not if they win :ehh: then we focus on shutting on everyone elseZzz

The Knicks don’t even got to win it all just don’t go out like punks, and leave room for improvement.

I don’t believe that the Knicks will move all their young guys though. The Randle rumor probably means they’re trying to keep Obi out of the deal at a minimum. The jazz just lost their best shot at leverage in Miami choosing to focus on KD. So I think it’ll be a chunk of picks and one or two prospects. But we gotta wait and see what happens. We’ve prolly got a while before the final offers take shape.
This is all I hope for. I'm not huge on the Spida trade but if we can keep Toppin and 1 of Grimes or Q and not trade all of our picks, I wouldn't be opposed to it.

It's also not a big deal if we don't move forward with this trade because I do see Grimes, Q and Toppin taking another leap if Randle isn't on the court. They should move him to backup center since most teams run small ball units and use this year to give Obi more minutes.

Do you think a back court of Brunson and Mitchell aren’t a target come the playoffs?

on the low Murray makes a lot more sense with Mitchell than Brunson. That’s the crazy thing about this and why Ainge ain’t as smart as he thinks he is. Ainge should have let it be known earlier that he wanted to move Mitchell and I think he gets more picks back and youth. Knicks might of signed and traded Mitch to get them more assets for example and ran with IHart/Sims at Center.

Even if Murray was already traded I don’t think the Knicks go after Brunson to pair him with Mitchell. They could try to move salary to get a better fit to pair with Mitchell off of cap space alone. Now with both Brunson and Mitchell they need assets to fix the hole on the roster this trade makes.

As much as everyone here is saying “ignore the small size of a Mitchell/Brunson backcourt” it’s clear the FO sees it as a problem and can’t commit to it unless they can keep the assets needed to fix it.

Of course they're a target come the playoffs. The question is can they get enough stops to win games with their offense. I think that's possible thanks to the big men anchoring the defense.

It's not "ignore the small size" it's "don't ignore everything else." And I'm not just talking about the dynamics they add to an offense. The descending contract structures, the likelihood of multiple trade chips remaining, and the fact that this team's core will be almost entirely 25 or younger are considerations we should include in the equation. I'm not stressing playoff defense. Thibs can either figure that out or Rose'll have to make more moves. Having Mitchell, Brunson, RJ, Mitch, and hopefully Obi might not be a contender. But it's a core with a lot of time to develop, tweak, or build off.

Not if we’re good.

Julius Randle turned fans from haters, to stans, back to haters again, and shyt there’s fans low key who have optimism for him coming next season.

Fans would be happy with Mitchell and Brunson with 45 wins and a hard fought first round exit.

Knicks fans are starved for good, entertaining basketball and Knicks fans would enjoy Brunson and Mitchell they pack a lot of fire power.
