Look at multi-monitor setups on pcs, where they are spanning the desktop over 3 or more monitors. That will give you a clue as to whether its legit tech or not.

Ok, enough with pictures, but to explain, this is how we see the world. For the :flabbynsick: like myself, you probably remember that tube tv's were not flat until the 90s. They were in fact, curved, but in the opposite direction. This was because the cathode ray gun was closer to curved in corners than flat corners. It took extra circuits and tech to make the screen flat and not have faded, blurry corners. Older projection tv's were the same way, but in the opposite direction. The projector was fixed in front of the screen and the screen was curved in the way you see these sets, but on both x and y. I mention this because, the projector guns are just like eyes in shape. This is how we see the world. Yes, a flat screen is pretty, but you will make out the corners better if they are curved inwards as well as it improving depth perception. This should go for all viewing angles, not just the center. Eventually, you will see the curve go to both plane. The idea of this being a fad or gimmick is simply incorrect. If it goes out, its because something better came out, but is is legit to the human eye.
You don't sit that close to a tv breh. That's why people are calling it out.

I'm looking at a 55inch version of this tech made by samsung...I see it's not getting rave reviews.

I don't understand the appeal either. I like a flat panel. and if they are gonna command a premium price, I don't see the point.
The point is the flat panel TV market has hittin so saturated and competitive that manufactures need a gimmick to convince people to buy high end TVs

You can find deals on 60 inch, top specs for around 800. Can't be much margin there

your eyes are still round. The world doesn't change just because you are further away. Not to mention, TVs are getting bigger on average, so relatively we are closer and have a larger viewing area than ever before. It used to be rare to see over a 27" in a house. Now we're seeing 50" as average.

People are calling it out because they think its a gimmick, but that's just because the television manufacturers' brainwashing is complete. The science behind a curved screen is sound and has been around since there were projectors. If it weren't they wouldn't have needed distortion calculations (therefore needing processors) to flatten out pictures. Flat CRTs, then flat screen tech is the gimmick that is based on aesthetics. if you want better picture quality and the darkest black reproduction a CRT kills an LED even with local dimming. But they aren't pretty and are heavy, so people bought into Trinitrons, then black bulb flat screens. Then the flat panels were neat and lighter, but to this day can't properly display refresh rates or reproduce black or white properly. They don't even properly display the color spectrum. That's before mentioning the geometry calculations that go into producing non-distorted flat corners. But again, we get them for aesthetics.

The curved screen is a return to nature in comparison. It can't fix the refresh rate and blacks problem, but it can create headroom since it doesn't need the same distortion calculations. Now if we can just get large, curved, OLED 4k sets. Tech is bringing us closer to nature. Yes, its another set to buy, but at least its closer to how we see rather than just what women think jibes with their decor.

it is ridiculous when sold to homes with about 10 feet of viewing distance and a bunch of guests on the sides who see a shyt view of the action. since 3d it has been clear that tv manufacturers are struggling and desperate for something to make people stop looking at tablets. they want to nip a migration toward portable screens in the bud but dont really know how to do it
They can't nip it, people want to be portable.

The issue with TV is that its reaching a point of diminishing returns. I mean what else can they possibly do to get the screen looking even sharper? Are we going to squeeze in 4K into 32 inch TV's? Yeah I see that coming, but is it NECESSARY? That whole pixel pushing nonsense is still something that I see as absolutely ridiculous...people bragging about 1080P on their phones...a 5 inch screen :beli:

TBH a 800x480 resolution is STILL good enough on a 4 inch to 4.5 inch screen to me, all that other gimmicky shyt is corny to me.

I don't think curved screens are a gimmick though.

I was believing this thread, why not believe it :manny:
But then I came across the bolded part and now I have to take this study and :camby:
Not all 3DTV's are the same. Some have 60hz refresh rates when you need at the very least 120
But 240 and up is recommended. I have a decent small sized 3DTV and I've watched Avatar, Alice in Wonderland, 3D Porn/etc. And all of those looked fantastic in 3D. So calling it a gimmick is bullshyt
Now my shawty got a crucial 3DTV in her living room. And the 3D on that looks better than the 3D in Imax
Watched Alice in wonderland again over there just last week
The end scene where she fights and beheads the dragon? Her running up that tower thingy? :ohlawd:

If this researcher can get that wrong, I don't see why I should listen to his curved TV theory even if he is correct. I'd just rather see it from a more reliable source at this point imo :manny:
3DTV was always a gimmick, that shyt was never going to take off. It causes too many problems for people who do not have perfect vision.

Its the reason why Nintendo is abandoning the 3D shyt on their handhelds as well. I am glad that phase is over.

though i make fun of the kinect, the future of TVs will probably involve its features, albeit done much better. apple will probably be the company to do it.

i think it is fine to keep cramming higher resolution into all tvs since it gives people usage options. the early phase makes it a bad idea to spend top dollar, but over time it will be priced right. PCs and game consoles of the future may make great use of these features. we may end up with a future where screens are ubiquitous and interchangeable; if you want a screen to sit on a desk, you go buy a smaller one and it doesnt matter what you want to do with it since it can broadcast tv or give you the clarity needed for reading text...

the phone definitely has diminishing returns when it comes to resolution.i think they need to focus more on brightness, glare, and durability

i have seen no advantage to curved tv, nor anybody expressing a preference for it after having it. it seems to be just another tv gimmick. the size of home viewing distances and the sizes of the tvs simply dont allow for the benefits of curved screens to really matter.

well if it does provide a superior experience for one person seated in the right position, then it is not "nothing but a gimmick"
