Easier to fukk it up
Chrono cross at least has the bones of a modern game being 3d
It's one of those rare cases where it's not much you can do to the game to improve it outside of maybe giving it hi-rez 2D sprites.No disrespect to the 3 people that like Chrono Cross but who not remake Chrono Trigger, you know, the one everybody likes?
Also there's something story-wise that they can really clear up in Chrono cross maybe a bit of retcon and potential for a sequel

no remake is needed.
the only thing that would be nice is a pixel remaster, maybe.
Or port the DS version onto modern systems, but keep the SNES script (since many hated the DS script changes)
