Nolan himself said this film isn't being character-driven or any of the like. Why are people still bytching about that aspect?

Just because he says that's what he's going for doesn't mean it will work for everyone though. Same thing with pacific rim. Guillermo was going for an homage to a certain type of flick. That's awesome. I appreciate that. But it doesn't mean it won't have a negative effect.

The artist can tell you what their work is but once it's out to the public, everyone will have their own interpretation. Their intention doesn't always matter. Hell it may not matter at all

So I wasn't planning on seeing it this weekend but my friend, who used to be a soldier, really wanted to see it so I tagged along.

First off, it's a gorgeous movie. If you don't see this in IMAX or the best way possible you're doing yourself an injustice. The shots are awesome the composition tells a story along with the music and the ticking clock constantly in the score. Nolan just knows how to work a camera and hit you over the head with gorgeousness.

But damnit I didn't care about a single soul in the movie. If he would've given me just an iota of character or character development I would've been happy. Stuff would happen and my friend was so enraptured and I just wasn't there. It didn't grab me. It would've been nice to give names to a lot of those British boys with black hair because it wasn't easy to tell them a part. The movie has these emotional beats that just played hollow for me because I didn't care and I wish I did. It's solid. It's not great but that's not a knock.

Now to be fair, as a former soldier, she explained to me why it worked for her without the characters or character development because when you're in the middle of battle there's no time for it. Which I get and respect but I just couldn't get with it.

Nolan made a beautiful looking house with almost no soul inside of it. I was actually checking my phone and had to catch myself from falling asleep a couple times. It's the same issue with interstellar for me.

When I was in 9th grade I dated this chick who was gorgeous. But the more we dated the more I found out she was about as dumb as a bag of hammers. That's this movie to me. Very pretty to look at but not much else underneath.
It's actually fascinating to me that people seem to feel that way about a lot of Nolan movies. I got teary eye'd during interstellar when Coop meets back up with Murph as shes about to die. And this film was exhilarating. It felt as if I were there with those soldiers, and I felt the same emotions they would've been feeling (fear, camaraderie, heroism). When all those civilian ships arrived I was like :gladbron: :salute: get me the fukk outta here! But your complaint is a reoccurring one I see with Nolan, so it must be legitimate, but I don't exactly get it. But it's also difficult to describe why something doesn't necessarily grab you.

We're all different people so things hit us differently. He's spoken on this though. He acknowledges that some people don't connect with his stuff emotionally and others do. That's art. The Godfather works for me but it's boring for some. That's the way it is. Film is an emotional thing. Yes there are certain subjective things about it but it's a very personal thing.

I could see that tho:ld:
Me too. Nolan movies have always just worked for me. Even back when I was a teenager watching Insomnia in theaters. (though back then I didn't know it was a remake)

For all your complaints thought a 7-7.5 is still a pretty good score

I said it's good or solid. All the other stuff he hit on means I can't say it's a bad movie. I can call it meh yeah but it's not bad. Just doesn't work for me because again the stuff that I respond to in movies he seems to care less and less about :russ: so he's basically telling me to kick rocks

This character development thing is overrated. As if we need them to have pointless conversations about where they're from, or flashbacks scenes or some kind of CLICHE shyt that has little to do with the plot. We're so accustomed to caring about one or two people over the ENTIRE masses of people with their own individual stories.

I ask you this. Those when civilians risked their lives to go on the rescue mission, was it because they knew their backstories or because they CARED for human life? That was the point. Not to care for this or that character, but care in general. Nolan even purposely had them look alike so you aren't focusing on one person in general but the situation itself.

And with that said, there WERE character development. The actions and reasons behind them are clear of the kind of characters they were. Tommy's unwillingness to give up "Gibson" spoke on his character as well as Alex's. Gillian Murphy's character is an UNNAMED character yet you know his cowardice or PTSD he acquired. Both the Navy Captain and the old civilian rescuer character of DUTY regardless of the risk were very acknowledged. And so it. You don't NEED to know these peoples background or history. For WHAT? What does it serve for what this movie serves? The movie is called DUNKIRK and that's what the film is about in EVERY perspective of the situation. You saw what they went through, it was made so you can get their experience from their perspective outright and WHY they were regarded as heroes instead of in their eyes as failures or an embarrassment.

Make films that people can only enjoy in Imax brehs.

Be mad that you do not have money to experience a film made with the best quality possible and shown on the best quality screen possible so you get th e wack grainy cam footage instead and cannot enjoy it like those who CAN afford it, peoples :mjlol:
