What's happening is how big deals are done anytime the City is involved. There is ALWAYS a fake soap opera but wayy behind the scenes both sides pretty much have some unstated agreement. The menu has already been decided, the soap opera represents the negotiations where each side tries to get their dessert (with the cherry on top).
This is what happened with the Bally's Casino (1.7Billion) and two huge developments that were announced in last cpl years (One Central - 20 Billion and Lincoln Yards - 6 Billion).
Lightfoot and the Bears didn't account for her losing reelection but the new mayor is definitely on board. Politically speaking he can't lose the Bears bc it would hurt his image with the business community, which is actually pretty good considering how far to the left he's been portrayed.
The Bears gambled by buying the Arlington Heights property bc they assumed it would pressure Lightfoot into making some huge concessions regarding Soldier Field upgrades etc. Remember this happened in 2021. They probably figured she would want an easy win on an issue that would be a nice feather in her cap for reelection and to generally bolster her popularity.
But honestly for all of her issues, one thing I respect about her is that as soon as she thinks you're trying to bully her she holds her ground. Sometimes for too long, but at least in the beginning she doesn't hold back. She clowned the fuk out of them, saying they should concentrate on beating the Packers first lmao.
She knew and EVERYONE in the state knows the bears don't want to leave the City. This is actually not the first time they threatened to leave to Arlington Heights. They tried it with Daley as well and he ignored them saying no one is going to cheer for the "Arlington Heights Bears" and said he would stop them from using "Chicago" in their name
The gamble is now hurting them bc our Assessor updated the valuation on the property to a figure that is close to the sales price. The property tax jumped from 2 million to 16 million (soap opera)
, but then they appealed, negotiated, and now it's around $8 million.
