Exactly. Black American music was created from poor black people in the south. Nothing more nothing less LOL at all this European traditions/African traditions stuff. Our culture as a whole comes from making something out of nothing and the same has happened with our music. Literally, its just the expression of black americans at the time and what we were going through

And a lot of foreigners seem to have a hard time understanding that black americans were participants in the creation of new western/American culture. We weren't just bystanders, nikka been influencing this country even during slavery.

And another thing. One can make the case that black American music has inspired the diaspora moreso than the other way around. Shows you just how African it is:yeshrug:
It was a mix of some African and some European. Gospel music is a clear indicator of this like I posted in my last post. I don't think it's a coincidence they sound alike being that the slaves sang in the fields before they had access to instruments. I also don't think it's a coincidence gospel STILL has those same harmonies that move you emotionally since it isn't very commercial like other genres. Even President Obama uses the talking with emotion technique that preachers use and that stemmed from gospel, which has connection to tribal african music. The connection is there if you open up your eyes.

With these genres coming from the minds of poor black American southerners, just how African or European can it be? I think people just say that to give the origins a level of authenticity, that in my opinion, is just not needed. I've heard jazz was European influenced just because the musicians were using "European" instruments:what: before.

It has nothing to do with that. Its all about the mind

From my perspective: It's just a branch of White American culture with a darker history (no pun intended). Black American have been through a lot and resent their white counterparts (rightfully so) because of their lack of recognition as one of the most significant contributors to what this country has become in terms of a financial and military super power.

But from an outsiders point of view, you take away that struggle and the racist aspect of American society, both black and white americans typically have the same mindset in general. Your music and your foods, your customs are more closely related to that of the British than it does any African.

Dont get me wrong, Caribbean blacks have the same issue due to our European slave masters. But listen to black Cuban folk music. Listen to Haitian folk music. Even Black Dominican folk music. The shyt SCREAMS AFRICAN, loud. I dont get that from American music. I see an extention of white American culture which in itself is an extension of British culture but with an African variant

Dont take this the wrong way, by the way. Just stating a point of view.

That is not what i mean at all. Please see my statement above for the rest of my explanation

One of the most intelligent posts I ever seen on the Coli. The worst thing the American CAC did to the black man in America was COMPLETELY strip yall of ANY link to any one defined peoples in Africa. African Americans have had to start a brand new culture from fukking scratch and grasping at straws for what may or may not be their actual ancestry from the continent.

That is exactly my point, before they had access to iinstruments, the slaves were still
making music but they were using techniques that originated where they came from
and it was just passed down as generations grew. We know it as gospel music but if you listen to a gospel song especially from the times before rap, you can clearly hear it sounds like some African music. Not the instruments but the way it is sung, especially the harmonies.

You really think people just forgot about everything they did beforethey came here?. Thats like saying you moved to India and forgot how to rap because you wasnt in NYC anymore. Just because you are in a different land doesnt mean your MIND forgets where it once was.

Jazz was heavily influenced by european music :manny: still black american music. Same with the fiery preaching, that comes from batshyt english evangelicals, black people made it smoother and less offensive.
