can we agree that John Calipari and Roy Williams are not good coaches?

Some say he "decided to stay" others would argue good ol Roy encouraged him to come back. You think Cal would force a kid to stay and risk getting injured if he was a high lotto pick? :beli:

Blame Coach Cal for what? We lost 98% of our players to the NBA draft and still should've been in the NCAAT. All the while experiencing the most devastating injury our team could've suffered. Randle and Wiggins next year breh, how mad are you gonna be?

Cal told Terrance Jones he wouldn't be a top 10 pick in the 2011 draft and he should stay and improve his position. He dropped and has barely played a minute in the league.

WHile i agree hes not a very good defensive coach and id take a decent amount of coaches over him as far as x's and o's or if i had one game to play and got to pick a coach but everyone has flaws

If Izzo or Ryan coaches UNC the defense would be better but the offense would be:flabbynsick:

Plus i question if coaches like Ryan are great defenisve caoches when the reality is they just slow the game down to a snails pace to limit possesions so every game is low scoring

Izzo and Ryan do is get the most out of their talent. Roy has always had a difficult time doing that, both at Kansas and at Carolina. Consistently maximizing talent is a constant challenge for him. There is plenty of talent on Carolina's roster every year.

Also different teams and different strengths the only way for Wisconisn to win is to play like that most UNC teams are not built to play at a grind it out pace

The problem with Roy is that he's stubborn as shyt. He knows what he's doing is right and he'll keep doing it over and over to try and prove it. Problem is he's not always right. Everyone knew Hairston needed to play more than the 18 minutes he was getting but when fans/media brought this up to Roy, it only made his beliefs stronger. It usually takes something drastic to happen for him to change his ways.

Marcus Ginyard had to get hurt for Danny Green to be made a starter
We had to get blown out by the worst team in the ACC for him to put in Marshall for Drew
Get blown out by Miami, season on the line and he finally starts PJ

where they cross-over and clap boards
Barnes and McAdoo should've been gone after one year. Barnes was the next big thing coming out of high school. :umad:

So you're not even going consider the strike that year which is why a lot of players came back that yea,r even Jones...McAdoo isn't hurting for money which is why he came back and good thing he did. Roy didn't hurt is stock, his play did that.

Terrence wanted to come back and win a championship more than anything else and he is a UK legend now that he did. I did forget about the lockout though which is a very good point and played a huge factor in a lot of these guys decisions. He got drafted by a team who has like 8 PF's. The couple times McHale gave him real minutes he was actually relatively productive. At least shows you that he does deserve some PT

Harrison Barnes was a pre-season all american as a freshman. shyt is the equivalent of John Wall coming back a second season. Guess ol roy just didn't nurture that top pick talent in him :smugobama:

oh, niggs still tryna hold on to that shyt w/ roy after he switched the lineup? cool.

if anything, after everyone left this team for dead (*NIT) in jan and he switched his whole strategy whereas some coaches would never do that, its proven how good of a coach he is.

You def can't cuban B 2 natty titles. He does seem to have too many tweeners on his roster.

Roy is a GOOD coach, and a damn good one at that, just not a great one. How many schools would take a good coach right now? He has talent there, but probably not the right mix of talent (and that is rightfully so on him).

edit: I can't even say he's not great. He just needs to adjust his recruiting. He can get talent, but Calipari is getting the lion's share of best players in the country.

tough talk coming from a school that setup fake classes for it's athletes and paid 100s of thousands of dollars to Tyler Zeller's mom for doing nothing. Not to mention Roy holds his players back and encourages them to stay multiple years even when they're ready for the NBA and even when it will hurt their draft stock. We're a players first program and hide ya recruits cuz we're taking all of them out chere..better hope more 5* in-state talent comes along :umad:

shots fired....

African American studies FTW!!!

And they still got off from the NCAA!!! :why:

overrated and bad are not the same thing. they just overrated. both are held in higher esteem than izzo and he better. hell, they both held in higher esteem than calhoun and he got the same amount as both combined.

that's fair and I agree.

Roy's two titles don't make him exempt from criticism. He has coached some teams that underachieved to a horrific extent. He is slow to adjust in games and over the course of a season. He often can't seem to figure out how to play to his players' strengths when they don't fit his original strategy. Talented teams that get blown out by 20-30 points multiple times in a season usually reflect a deficiency in coaching. His teams panic a lot. They come out flat in tournament games too often. Even when he has length, size, and quickness he can't figure out how to shape a team into a defensive force. Last year's team struggled with consistency, which was lamentable considering how stacked the team was. His teams never guard the 3 well, and it's particularly perplexing to watch them guard the 3 poorly against 3-point shooting teams. The best attribute Roy has is that when he has an extremely talented team he gets out of their way for the most part and let's the talent do whatever it decides to do offensively.

Give Bo Ryan or Tom Izzo this team and there is no way in hell they'd be an 8 seed with so many lapses in focus and blowout losses.

:manny:

Give Bo Ryan and Izzo a team with one senior (coming off an ACL tear), a freshman pg who weighs 160 lbs soaking wet who has to play 30 plus minutes right out the gate cause of no back up, two freshman centers (one who is now on maybe his 4th the year of organized ball and the the other who is 170 lbs), two shooters who both played only sparringly last year (and PJ shot horrible in ACC play last year so there was no telling how he'd bounce back), and a tweener who jumped from #6 on the scouting report to #1 in his sophomore year...and they do significantly better than an 8th seed? The whole "slow to adjust in games and over the course of the season" mantra is a by product of people falling in love with over coaching. That's why you see Duke and UNC get ran from time to time. Both coaches allow their players to play thru mistakes, "figure it out", and allow what's in their chest (or not in their chest) to show itself in tough situations. Not everybody coach the same way. Ultimately this comes down to 18-21 year olds. Coach Cal isn't any worse of a coach because a Darrius Washington, Jr missed those free throws or Roy isn't worse of a coach cause he had a top seeded team fall in the Elite 8 cause their pg broke his hand. It's too many variables.

This is the only legit criticism right here. Roy is too old fashioned and by the Dean Smith book. But this year this team was thin of perimeter scorers so Roy tried to spread PJ and Leslie to give the 2nd unit a boost. It got desperate so Roy just said "F" it and started his 5 best.
