Bruce Wayne has been portrayed as both Keaton's and Bale's versions in past comics. He's been both a dark secluded Bruce and also a self-entitled, spoiled playboy. I don't know why people are blaming the actors for not having enough depth when it was the director and script's vision in the first place. You guys really think it was Bale's call to make that voice?
And if I had to choose, I'd pick Bale's Bruce Wayne. I don't think Keaton's Bruce would work in Nolan's universe. You would look a bit too obvious if you weren't balling like Bale's Bruce in today's setting. He was perfect for how the '89 film was. It mostly comes down to how the characters were written, not so much the actors. Unless they just suck in general![]()
I didn't wanna it to come off like I was sayin Christian Bale was a hack. That's not what I'm sayin. Christian Bale is a beast. And just because I wasn't a huge fan of his performance overall it doesn't mean I hated everything he did.
It's not about blame. You win as a team and you fail as a team. Christian Bale is a superstar talent so maybe there's other reasons why he couldn't elevate these films with his performance. Maybe it's cause he wasn't given the right tools. Who knows.

For one thing I know it must have been tough for Bale to have to balance that tonal inconsistency with the writing and direction. On one hand you have a director telling you to play it straight like it's real and then you look down at the script and it has you talkin all shakespearean and shyt... talmbout "I seek the means to fight injustice. To turn fear against those who pray on the fearful..."

And that's really one of the biggest things I took away from Bale's performances in these movies. That he just looked lost out there a lot of the time. Like he was never quite comfortable living under the skin of this character.
Then again that is just one man's interpretation. I'm sure there are people out there who saw something completely different.
