Newark Liberty Airport has been named the country’s worst airport by AirHelp, an airline traveler rights group. They ranked airports all over the world, 132 in all, and Newark Liberty ranked 116th, the lowest of any American airport.

The airports were ranked according to on time performance (60%), service quality (20%), and food and shopping options (20%). According to Bloomberg News, one of the biggest problems with Newark Liberty is weather related delays. It is pointed out in the Bloomberg report that the airport is avoided by many travelers because of their notorious delays. Newark Liberty, which handles 42 million passengers a year, is replacing Terminal A in a $2.7 billion project.

The highest ranking US airport was Atlanta’s at 34th. American airports got generally lower scores in part because of the long lines at security checkpoints.

Lisbon, Portugal’s airport was named the worst in the world at 132nd while Doha’s airport in Qatar was deemed to be the world’s best, followed by Tokyo, Japan, and Athens, Greece. Kuwait’s airport and the airport in Eindhoven, the Netherlands were also among the world’s worst

I disagree. I don't travel that often but EWR is one of the better airports I've passed through. LaGuardia is a complete joke, and I'm surprised that they aren't ranked at the bottom

NEWARK, NJ - The late Kenneth Gibson, Newark's first black mayor, once said, "Wherever American cities are going, Newark will get there first."

So it’s only fitting that Broad Street, one of the city’s main thoroughfares that has seen drastic changes in recent decades, was renamed today to Mayor Kenneth A. Gibson Boulevard. Right off the road, you can find Newark Symphony Hall, City Hall, Prudential’s headquarters, Military Park and new developments in the making.

The road has been known as Broad Street for hundreds of years in a city that is one of the oldest in the United States. Mayor Ras Baraka pointed out the thoroughfare was dubbed Broad Street at a time when slavery still existed.

“Now, by changing the name from Broad Street to Kenneth Allen Gibson Boulevard means that we made a change in history,” Baraka said at the renaming ceremony. “That we've moved forward in history. That we've moved past isolationism and segregation and hatred and oppression and moved to a place that Newark can be proud of.”

Gibson died in March at the age of 86. He became mayor in 1970, and was credited with restoring stability to a city that had just gone through the 1967 riots.

He laid in state at the city hall rotunda and funeral services were held at Newark Symphony Hall. City and state officials and residents turned out to pay their respects.

“It’s very fitting. We spent a lot of time there, in that building” said Gibson’s wife, Camille Gibson, as she pointed to city hall in the distance. “Ken’s heart was here and I think he would just be looking down loving this."

The blessings keep coming to West Side High School in Newark, where its principal, Akbar Cook, is removing barriers to education and making national news for how he cares about his kids.

Remember when Ellen DeGeneres had him on her talk show twice? She gave him $50,000 each time for his “Lights On” program that keeps kids off the street from 6 p.m. to midnight.

Well, Oprah Winfrey wants the lights to stay on for a long time, too. In a surprise visit Friday evening, Winfrey dropped in to say she is giving $500,000 to West Side’s summer initiative, which is also held during the school year on Friday nights.

“I heard about West Side and all of the great things that are happening here," Winfrey said to a packed gymnasium of screaming students. “I thought, ‘what can I do?’"

Lights On, which was first featured in a column I wrote three years ago, has been gaining attention after Cook came up with another innovative idea to help students who were being bullied.

He installed washing machines at the school last September. His students, who couldn’t afford to wash their clothes, were missing school because they were being harassed by classmates when they wore dirty garments.

That story, also first featured in a column here, blew up and went viral as media outlets learned about Cook. DeGeneres had him on the show twice. Winfrey said she saw Cook in a CBS news report and loved how his approach to education was comprehensive.

“I was moved by his story," Winfrey said. “Let me find this guy. Let me see what I can do to help further what he’s trying to do."

Half a million does a lot. Plus, Winfrey’s visit says a lot more.

After she left, Cook held her hand in the parking lot, grateful for her time and generosity.

“My kids feel like they don’t have anyone," Cook said. “And you just took time out of your busy schedule to show me and my babies love. I’m floored. I’m truly humbled."

Winfrey stopped him.

“We are humbled by you," she said.

Cook, who is also the varsity basketball coach, doesn’t seek the spotlight. This ride West Side has been on is for the kids. Not him. It’s never about him.

The public sees that each time he does an interview. West Side has received detergent, clothing, deodorant, toothpaste and hygiene products from around the world. The list includes Germany, Austria, Australia, South Africa, Switzerland, Norway, Kenya, Barbados and Canada.

“Love is powerful," Cook said. “This is because they have been showing my kids and me and this community that they love them."

Winfrey, who came with her friend and CBS co-anchor Gayle King, had something extra for his kids. Everyone who was at the “Lights On” program would receive a $50 gift certificate to go shopping.

Students and staff lost it. And, that was before she told them about the $500,000.

“This is big," said Inaisha Baker, 17. “I was shocked.”

Students say their school is often maligned for having a non-academic reputation and perceived as a place where fights occur. Not anymore. Thank Cook and his staff for that. He’s been to Harvard University and other colleges for conferences to talk about what he’s doing at West Side

Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J), a presidential candidate and Newark’s former mayor, has tweeted about the principal, praising him during Black History Month as someone who should be admired.

Count Winfrey as his latest fan, who believes in Cook’s wholistic approach to making kids successful.

“Everybody always talks about the grades. You can’t start to talk about the grades unless they feel safe, unless they feel seen, unless they feel respected, unless they feel valued," she said.

Winfrey wasn’t there that long as the kids swarmed around her, clamoring for selfies. In the rear of the building, she took more pictures. Inside, student were still stunned.

“I didn’t see it coming," said Ayuba Ismail, 17.

The only thing anyone knew was that somebody famous was coming to the school. Cook didn’t tell anyone, but he did say the pizza party for the program was provided by Winfrey. Few got the hint, even after seeing Oprah’s name and the name of her pizza on the box: O That’s Good! Many of them thought DeGeneres was coming.

Athletic Director Gary Taylor penciled in LeBron James. After seeing Winfrey, he said her stature, along with the national attention, will continue to help West Side flourish.

“We did it with love," Cook said of Winfrey’s visit.

“It wasn’t for some nonsense or for kids getting killed. We are the trailblazers for the world to see what could be done."

The Rockefeller Foundation Launches $5.5 Million Opportunity Zone Community Capacity Building Initiative for Select U.S. Cities; Newark, N.J. is First City Selected, with Co-Funding from Prudential Financial
May 21, 2019

NEWARK, NJ, May 21, 2019 – The Rockefeller Foundation today announced an initiative to help U.S. cities attract responsible private investment in economically-distressed communities through Opportunity Zones created in the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. This effort will help ensure new investment delivers sustainable benefits for more than 30 million low-income Americans living in Opportunity Zones.

Through the initiative, six cities will receive financial and human resources support for two years. Support includes funding for and designation of a Chief Opportunity Zone Officer, embedded in city government or city economic development agencies. It also includes funding for two community engagement specialists to support and facilitate community engagement and involvement in the proposed Opportunity Zone projects and businesses.

Newark is the first city selected, and will receive $920,000 in co-funding from Prudential Financial and The Rockefeller Foundation, working through the Newark Alliance, which has a commitment to equitable development. The other five cities will be announced over the next few months.

“The only way to make sure the ‘opportunity’ in Opportunity Zones benefits all Newark residents is to intentionally focus resources to ensure it happens,” said Mayor Ras Baraka. “I am so pleased that through the support of our longtime partner in progress, Prudential, Newark was able to be the first city in The Rockefeller Foundation initiative.”

“Prudential is committed to maximizing the potential impact of the Opportunity Zone program to spur catalytic investments in our hometown of Newark, New Jersey. By providing capital, as well as our expertise from our other Newark redevelopment and Opportunity Zone projects, we will help close the gap between inequality and opportunity as the city grows,” said Lata Reddy, senior vice president of Diversity, Inclusion & Impact, Prudential. “Our partnership with The Rockefeller Foundation is a crucial step toward ensuring that inclusive, responsible investment benefits all Newark residents and communities.”

A Newark cop who shot two men in the head, killing one, during a police pursuit in January will be free while he awaits his trial on charges including aggravated manslaughter.

Judge Ronald D. Wigler made the decision after watching police video footage showing Officer Jovanny Crespo jump out of a moving cruiser three separate times to fire on the car. The driver had fled a traffic stop after an officer spotted a gun under the driver’s leg, according to authorities and the video.

Crespo’s family members clutched each other and wept at the announcement, and numerous police officers in the room applauded. Several relatives of the man who died, Greg C. Griffin, 46, sat silently and then left the courtroom.

Assistant Prosecutor Alexander Albu said the video showed Crespo’s “outrageous recklessness" as he fired at the moving car, aiming for both the driver and the passenger and even shooting when another cruiser was potentially in his line of fire.

But Crespo’s attorney, Patrick Toscano, said that his client acted bravely when he fired on the car and was justified in doing so because someone in the vehicle pointed a gun at him. A gun was recovered from the car and the passenger, Andrew Dixon, 35, of Newark, was charged with possessing it. Dixon was shot in the face and has since been released from the hospital.

“What I see on the video was stellar police work,” Toscano said. He said Crespo “was the only one with the courage and guts to run up to the vehicle."

Judge Wigler said that he did not believe that Crespo would be a danger to any person or the community, or that he would flee or fail to appear in court. He released Crespo on the condition that he surrender any firearms and report to a court officer weekly.

Crespo spent a week in jail after the indictments were handed up. Toscano said he is a married father of four who coaches youth sports and is now worried about finding a way to feed his family. Crespo has been suspended without pay since the end of February, when the prosecutor’s office announced it would present a case to a grand jury.

The incident began around 11:15 p.m. on Jan. 28 at Clinton Avenue and Thomas Street when a Newark officer working alone stopped Griffin’s vehicle for speeding. Video shows Griffin did not follow her orders to turn off his car. After she spotted the gun and back-up arrived, Griffin drove away.

Crespo was a passenger in one of several cruisers that started pursuing Griffin’s vehicle. The body camera video footage shows Crespo urging his partner, Hector Ortiz, to cut off the vehicle and drive faster before jumping out of the cruiser to fire on the car. He also told his partner someone in the car pointed a gun at him.

Ortiz repeatedly tells Crespo to relax and to stay in the car, later telling him he was worried he would get run over, according to the video.

Toscano objected to the video being shown in court, accusing the prosecutor’s office of “pandering to the press” and saying they “should be ashamed of themselves.”

Albu argued that the video was important when considering whether Crespo could be trusted to come back to court or to not commit another crime.

“Aside from again the recklessness and the danger that anyone who can act in this manner poses to society, there definitely is an issue with trusting an individual who at this point has been contradicted by not just numerous pieces of video evidence, but his own officers, in terms of what’s visible or not visible," Albu said.

He noted that Crespo never mentioned having a gun pointed at him after the scene of the first shooting, telling his partner when he got back in the car, “I shot at it bro.” He first mentioned having a gun pointed at him after the second shooting, the video showed.

Albu also said another officer involved in the pursuit, Officer Lopez, told the grand jury, “even had there been a gun in the car and someone holding it, he wouldn’t have been able to see it due to the tints.”

Toscano said his client has excellent character but has been “crucified” by the public in the wake of his indictment. He even pointed to the part of the courtroom where Griffin’s family sat, saying that people on that side believe Crespo is “Satan.”

“You don’t treat a hero like this. You don’t throw him in handcuffs,” he said.

While the video played and Albu commented on what was seen, Crespo appeared agitated, shaking his head, whispering frequently to his attorney, and shifting his weight from side to side.

The New Jersey Attorney General’s use-of-force guidelines discourages shooting at a moving vehicle because of the risk to bystanders and passengers. The guidelines say officers should only fire on moving vehicles if there are no other options and there is an “imminent danger of death or serious bodily harm to the officer or another person.”

Thoughts on the incident with the Newark cop??

I was involved in a car accident, when a stolen car crashed into us years ago. If not for quick thinking of my man and that we were wearing seat belts, I wouldn't be here.
That was back when cops would pursue stolen cars, and it was during a chase that we got hit.

Not sure how I feel about this story.

*Oh, and in true Newark fashion, they put us in the same ambulance for treatment as the dude and girl who were in the stolen car.
