Talent isn’t really Wendell Carter’s problem. Staying healthy is. Maybe they didn’t trust him holding up (and I don’t know if they woulda rushed to pay him either.)
I think with the 2nd pick they wanted more.

Unfortunately the first pick wouldn’t have fetched anything, let alone their pick and if they wanted something major, attaching Wiggins woulda messed up the value of the pick. Even this year, they woulda loved to get something big for 7 and 14 but the pool of available vet talents wasn't out there.

They're not benching anyone making $30 mil a year. That is a sunk cost. You're either gonna start him or send him home completely. That goes for pretty much every team in this league. That's regardless of anyone who is coming in. Unless a team is dumb enough to seek you out (which isn't the case here), they're not gonna do that. Money does affect how teams use players.

Because the Warriors realize he's not yet ready to contribute to a winning-team, and they don't want to throw him in at the deep end. There's talks he won't even be brought back this season, that he won't return until 2022/23.
