from a ukrainian perspective, the first phase of the war was worth it - they successfully repelled the russians from most of the land they took. with the willpower they displayed, they clearly have a lot of people who would rather die than lose sovereignty in most of the country. the second phase, however, was foolish and should have been focused on shoring up defenses so that the ukrainian interior is much stronger than it ever was and then start negotiating a ceasefire and the annexation of the land they couldnt take back.

maybe. sometimes i read things that imply america was talking to russia the whole time without even involving zelensky until the americans encourage him to get involved. if they have done that, then who knows what the terms were, but if true, then it means zelensky is the least important person in the discussion no matter what he does.

it's also possible that zelensky may burn through men at too fast a rate or that russia gets a second wind and attacks with renewed strength later. in terms of resources, zelesnky is at a disadvantage over time.
