Imo season 2 and 5 of the wire were not trash, 2 was just mediocre and 5 was actually pretty good just too short. Them not allowing for 13 episodes hurt the shows ability to properly mature and end the plots and storylines. Lot of random shyt just to call it quits and nobody was happy at how marlo turned out.

Breaking bad suffers from the pg rating but that show was allowed to properly end well because they actually go more episodes to end the show off right.

The Sopranos, The Wire, and Mad Men are my personal Top 3. Do find myself loving BCS more than BB as well. Think it’s the writers taking what they learned with BB and going on a whole different level. The character building is way, way better.

agreed at the title…I can imagine the uproar this thread caused tho lol

*edit*

just read the OP…I agree about ‘boardwalk empire’ as well…recently did a series rewatch after watching ‘the sopranos’ and time has done it no favors…I wasn’t a fan of the jimmy darmody character but have to admit the show fell off dramatically after his death…granted there were still some great moments and new characters introduced after that point…but overall the show/story became a bit of a drag

I'm rewatching BB atm because I think its gonna sync up with BCS soon.

Its a great show. Maybe not as philosophical or realistic as Sopranos or The Wire but its gripping throughout and the great performances, especially from Cranston, Paul and Banks go a long way to making the show believable.

Mad Men fell apart in the final few seasons. It was dope for a while.

Agreed 100%. It's a really good show but I don't think the writing matches The Wire or The Sopranos. I don't expect shows to be hyper realistic but to me Breaking Bad is the blueprint for "serious" shows with convenient, coincidence driven writing. It starts early in the show but the plane crash in S2 was where it really jumped the shark and never stopped. You can make compelling television this way obviously, but I think cutting corners or hitting the nail too hard on the head becomes tiring after awhile. This is how you get stuff like Ozark where every season has a major plot altering event spurred by a 3AM writers room revelation where someone said "what if she trips and accidently breaks her neck?"

This is not to say The Wire and The Sopranos don't have coincidences or convenient parts. Every show does. But they don't drive the plot, episode after episode, season after season, like in Breaking Bad.

Season 2 was a pretty big gear change but I thought it was great, especially when things truly kick in by midseason. All of the pieces matter. The Greeks had came off as mysterious to me with their subtle, but deadly way of operating. Chris Bauer also delivered a hell of a performance as Frank Sabotka. It’s a season I appreciated a hell of a lot more upon rewatch.

I used to think this, but the cultural impact is too huge. And for a network TV show, it did more than it was supposed to do.

BB made boring ass New Mexico an interesting setting the same way The Wire and Sopranos made Baltimore and NJ into places that you otherwise wouldn't care about into great storyworlds.
