That's why white people try to hide black history or accomplishments. You can't really love yourself when all you are told is that your people are savages and white people civilized you.
“When kids don’t learn about their own heritage in school they don’t care about school”

i think this is why other races make their kids go to their own cultural centers for tutoring after school. To offset white washing

It's not new but you are dealing with a group that is more sensitive. This can't be denied. Just because something always happens or has always happened in the past doesn't make it cool. The youth today is not the same as before yet they are viewed and treated the same as previous generations. See the issue?

Also you can pretend passing down trauma isn't a factor if you want. It isn't the only issue. A singular issue never stands alone. But let's not be obtuse.

Also I find it suspect to act like older generations deserve a pass when the youth are going through something. Like come on. I noticed a lot of older folks are on that wave.

Who trained them and raised them, then? The television? Bill Nye the Science Guy? Passing the buck won't lead to a solution.

Oh I know! I'm supposed to blame rap! It's those damn rappers! TLR would like that better. smh If I would have come in here blaming rappers I'd have a thousand daps. shyt is corny and lame. This stuff starts in the home.
nah you actually don't need any scapegoats

the point... instead of focusing on who is to blame focus on helping people. what you gonna do re-raise them? if they didn't get raised right with love or empathy of whatever else they lacked they can't go back... it's much easier to advocate for Black mental health to be a priority than to start looking for who to point fingers at.

A lot of folks don't care about black men until we die.

We're seen as problems for everyone else and the causes of our own problems.

And nobody wants to hear a man complain about anything, they just want you to work a back breaking job, fend for yourself and die.

The heights
with a generation of nikkas growing up in this internet age not knowing what life was like before it

results like this was bound to happen, the negativity from: society, other groups, even black women

as Karlous miller even pointed out, Twitter is nothing but bashing of Black men from so many sides its ridculous.

can be to much for some young black american men to handle specifically those that are... lets say not with a strong mental fortitude to carry on.

breh tik tok is even worst :snoop: Imagine being 14 year old black boy on tik tok and every other video is black women/girls saying black men ain't shyt, broke,a king with no kingdom and bums..especially if they have a toxic mom in the house saying crazy shyt to them

Must be because we're too toxic. :francis:

This it's fukk Feminism for me

It's ridiculous to take privilege comes in goes because of your dikk

When the only white women don't or didn't have, in this country, was by choice

White women didn't want to vote, til they saw negro men were, then racist suffragettes came for their "rights"

I say racist because they had all types of dehumanizing talk for why Black men shouldn't vote...including because we looked at women--black women--as equals

I think most of this is due to social media.

A lot of heads come on here and seek affirmation from the lot of Kevin Samuels, Tommy Sotomayor, and other self-help black men clowns then face the offline realities that don't measure up and end up feeling worse than where they began.

These dudes aren't therapy. We need real therapy to manage through things and we also need a paradigm shift. We are still a men that over rely on a dwindling manufacturing sector as a means of work. We need to change our trajectory and prepare ourselves for the world stage, not my father-in laws era of men who could drop out of HS and still find work that paid enough to feed their families and purchase a home. We are doing something wrong and our young men are paying the price for it.

I think people are conflating the pressure on Black men as a whole with individual resilience and reliance on community.

Even in the crime wracked 1990s we had the lowest suicide rate of almost any group in the Western developed world. No bullshyt. While the boot is still on our neck I would not argue things are worse now versus then and especially not versus 1930s-1950s. What changed?

1. The disintegration of the Black collective: when you had family, the traditional Black Church (even if you are non-religious you have to admit this was a bedrock social and cultural institution), and an empathetic community, you could buffer yourself against this bullshyt.

2. Black mens' lives aren't easy but I think too many of us get protected for too long and don't develop a resiliency to struggle. 15-24 is when you get thrown into life and if you haven't been trained to have a strong identity and handle your shyt, you crumple more easily. Black folks have long had the worst economic indicators but the lowest suicide rate.

3. Black people are relatively more middle class and educated. I don't have stats but I am guessing the suicides are concentrated unevenly---with more in the segment of Blacks making more money or having more education than on average. People who feel they have more to lose ironically may often commit suicide more easily because they can't stand the thought of losing it or not achieving what they think they should have.

4. Social media is the devil. All it does is whittle away your self esteem with false images of others' happiness or you comparing yourself to the top 0.1%

Look up the countries with the highest suicide rates it's usually Guyana, Suriname and a few southern African and Pacific island nations in the top twenty. But let's just chalk it all up to atheism.

It’s actually surprising that Guyana which is unique has such a high rate and it’s a Caribbean cultured nation.

Even from a demographic perspective it’s similar to Trinidad and still.

Wonder what their reasoning is

I think the social and moral fabric religion provides--even if you believe it is fairy tales--is part of the story but not all of it. Typically suicide rates are broken out by developing and developed countries since poor countries have higher rates just due to the despair of conditions.

Amongst middle income/developed countries, East Asia--Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, etc. are FAR above the other developing countries. However, the religion story is muddled there since although Japan and China are basically atheist, there is a lot of religion in South Korea and their rate is above Japan many years so the story isn't clear.

Though the current spike is worrying, Black suicide rates are pretty low historically. I mean if we were a country I think we would have rates lower than almost any developed country

The dating game is fukked up, the economy is getting more and more inflated by the damn day, we’re still mid pandemic, nobody really wants to acknowledge or deal with black mens problems…it’s a lot of shyt going on out here that no one wants to speak on and if you do, you’re looked at as emotional or weak.

I feel for us black men, it’s a cold ass world

I read most of the cases are Indian descendents living in rural areas. Trinidad happens to have the third highest suicide rate in the Caribbean and the Indians are more likely to commit that as well.

Wonder what their reasoning is

I remember this was brought up here before and breh replied "if I lived in Guyana I'd kill myself too" :hubie: guess life there is hard.

Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven
All these questions about why? How about we all look in the mirror at how we look at black people who express they are going through some shyt….. We treat them like it ain’t shyt.

And then when they kill themselves we shame them and call them selfish and call them weak. So the next one surely doesn’t even want to come and talk to anyone in the first place.

White kid even mentions mental health and there’s a damn support team around him

this has to be part of the reason. because black men have faced tougher economic times before and yet suicide wasn't an option. it's mostly these black suburban brehs I feel
Number one cause is depression. Second is mental illness. Which both can really be mental illness.

People don’t really kill themselves over money and or women or shyt like that. They usually have things going on mentally that never get helped and they say fukk it. You can’t escape your own mind. And nobody helping you sort it out. Plus your mind isn’t even healthy….

Cause if it was just about hardships, there would have been mass suicide at all points from slavery to 1964

You are spot on about Guyana and one thing I do realize about Guyana is that the Indian people hate it so much that when they move to New York they try to Americanize themselves immediately. Meanwhile the black folks love talking about Guyana and visiting Guyana and still hold on to their tradition. Indians being racist towards blacks doesn’t help either.
