Who thinks that? We all realize there have been/currently are loopholes so that the richest Americans aren't necessarily paying as much as they might otherwise be forced to play. If anything, I'd wager that it's people on the right with the impression that they're paying the gov't half their paycheck to support people on welfare. I have very little patience for this type of hyperbole ... and its rampant in HL.
:beli: Why bring it up then?
all that matters is what was being paid... unless your looking for symbolism? In which case you can set it to whatever you want with the understanding that, that's not whats going to be paid?:ehh:

I bring it up to point out how it's bullshyt to equate raising the rate 3% to socialism. A lot of these slippery slope arguments are BS, tbh.

Also, wtf @ this smiley?? no

YOU'RE EMBARRASSED TO ADMIT YOUR SOURCES ARE HEAVILY SLANTED TO THE RIGHT, IT'S NOT A PERPLEXING MYSTERY BEYOND OUR COLLECTIVE COGNITIVE ABILITIES TO IMAGINE, BROTHER!
:russ: Not at all, but that's funny.

I've learned on fiscal issues, facts don't change progressive minds, it's emotions that guide them. Same thing with republicans on social issues, it's Jesus that guides them.

I'll post links though and see what happens :ehh: At least I'll have something to quote as to why links are a waste of time.

Agreed, it isn't socialism, but raising taxes on an economy hemorrhaging jobs already is simply bad policy...

Who's advocating that? I thought this thread was about raising the minimum wage? By the way wouldn't raising the minimum wage lead to folks at the bottom having more disposable income to by luxury items like tvs and ipads instead of necessities like food? Doesn't that spending fuel the economy?

So I understand that not everyone can be rich and that someone has to work in these fast food chains and retail stores.

but to tell me that I have to work 12.5 hours to make $100 pre tax dollars...

i think having the min. wage at 10 would be a reasonable compromise. but at the same thing my thing to the people crying about their pay and how they should make more is, prove your worth to a company and they will pay you, whether thats mcdonalds or the white house.

everyday i hear people complaining about money but you see them buying things they shouldn't.

personally im in a position where i can't make much more money in my current position so im training to become a supervisor which will at minimum net me a 35% pay increase. proving my worth to my boss has netted me a 8.5% raise.

being on the low end of the totem pole you get capped out; you can't make more money. so many people are scared to open their mouths and ask for what they want. whats wrong with being the manager of a mcdonalds? I know a guy that makes about 50K running a chick fil a.

Lets switch gears....

Do you guys think that making flipping burgers livable is going to help our community?:dahell:

:childplease:Lowering the incentive to do better, by making it unnecessary seems like the exact opposite of what we should be campaigning for as a community. These Democrat cacs want nothing more than for you to depend on the state, cause that means easy votes for them when the other side of the isle is threatening to cut the umbilical cord.:whew:

Bringing the jobs that have left our shores back should be our goal, not making the shyt jobs at the bottom of what we have left all we need to live comfortably. :obama:

everyone i know that works minimum wage jobs for a living, at some point in their lives had the option of doing better things but either were complacent and made excuses for why they cant do different

then years go by and the option no longer exists

the value of your labor isnt based on hard work, its almost 90% what you can be accountable for. In laymans terms education = more wages

some people realize it early and for some its too late

That's just the point though. It does not have to be that way. We accept the level of inequity we do here because that's what we're taught, but that's nowhere near necessary.

:what:
From Ford's Website

Henry Ford had reasoned that since it was now possible to build inexpensive cars in volume, more of them could be sold if employees could afford to buy them. The $5 day helped better the lot of all American workers and contributed to the emergence of the American middle class. In the process, Henry Ford had changed manufacturing forever.
just to clarify Ford here

the key thing here is "why"

notice this line: "more of them could be sold"

and not this line "because he cared about them living modestly"

:ohhh:

is it?

we are a pseudo capitalist country

and prior to industrialization wealth disparity was even worse than that.

at the end of the day, perceived value trumps everything. You could pay someone a ton, but inevitably based on the current system. The more educated(and certified) will get even larger bumps in pay. Youd just end up with inflation.

Government assistance programs are necessary to keep the low income class from becoming unruly. The romans did the same thing with monthly grain giveaways. At the end of the day some people will rise up and do whats necessary to ensure themselves and their families a higher spot in the pecking order and then there is the many that simply do not.

funny thing is, the class mobility here now is greater than its been in many years. That isnt taking into account race however(credit disparities, hiring disparities etc)

minimum wage jobs will stay minimum wage jobs strictly off the strength that anyone can do it. If that job required experience, training, a level of accountability it would be valued more. But we know that just isnt the case. You can get someone ringing up a cash register in literally an hour.

see in my opinion the way to curb the lower class is ensure solid education at a young age

but to me i think the biggest thing is strong parenting at a young age to push the need to have "drive" to be better. Alot of folks are comfortable just where they are at:ehh: and im like this, if thats how they feel than do you. But the sad part is this mentality ends up a passed down trait.

but dont come and cry on the internet about your position when you made choices to not atleast try and get something better.

See back in the day an un-educated person could almost always get a job either farming or working in a factory of some sort and getting nice money.

but with advances in engineering and the what not, those jobs have been permanently replaced. The rest transported to cheaper labor overseas(this is trending backwards now due to mass unpopularity, but I doubt it will be that significant)

If you want to be successful in TODAYS economy you have to desire training, education, and the ability to be accountable. If you dont pick up these traits along the way, minimum wage is likely in your future :to:
