I remember Homeboys In Outer Space and from the few eps I saw it was absolutely terrible, like the lowest brow shyt you could think of. And I was a kid realizing how awful it was.

But you also have to look at it from the other side of the coin
Even when you don’t agree with the assessment

Where operating on some “low brow” shyt

If Homeboys in Outer Space had bigger names attached to it at the time
Guaranteed that shyt would’ve hit and the conversation/narrative would be different

First of all there was no “comparison” being done in the episode. The cop simply asked her how many seasons the show ran for. It was funny throwaway line, not to be taken seriously or “thought” about.

Secondly, comedy is of course subjective, but there is a CLEAR LINE between a trash product and a decent one. Homeboys In Outer Space was AWFUL. There’s no “cult” following for it. Nobody speaking on it with fond memories. Hell, you yourself probably didn’t even REMEMBER the show until Donald tossed it into the episode as a funny moment of absurdity.

Homeboys In Outer Space has NO BUSINESS whatsoever being compared to Martin, Jamie Foxx Show, or any other black series of any repute. That shyt was buffoonery to the highest level without putting chicken and watermelons in their hands.

It’s a lame comparison that I see stated around here often when surreal dramedies have existed before both shows. Louie being a prime example. That being said, it’s still a really good watch. Dave’s second season in particular is disconnected, dark, and awkward just like the main lead’s state of mind. The episodes in the back-half made up for how slow and uncomfortable the overall season was, and the finale brought everything together nicely.

Atlanta is infinitely better creatively and that’s not a knock on the series. Glover’s crew has put something together that can be viewed as culturally significant later down the line and I just don’t see that with Dave.

I usually don't like the "it's all been a dream" trope, but this was a great job of ape-ing it. Darius realizing he wasn't still in the tank at the last moment and being at peace with it was great. "EVERYBODY GET IN MY PINK MASERATI, IT'S OUTSIDE!!!" made me pause the show and laugh for a solid 2 minutes. I don't love that they didn't really tie up any storylines, but the last 2 seasons have been all about being meta, so it makes sense
