depends on how you look at it.
it won't ever really go away because a southern dude on the come up if they get a chance to do a joint with a well liked rapper from up top they'll be happy but at the same time these NY guys used to picky and would tell them nah, but now they see someone buzzing they'll hop on it regardless because it's exposure down south for them.
plus, think of the plethora of NY rappers back in the mixtape days of 02 to 05.
when these guys could put out a few fire freestyles raw over other peoples beats and do a hood video on SMACK it was all good, they got attention and people waiting to see what they could do but when the mixtape game slowly started to change and the more the original material had to come they couldn't keep up and only a few survived.
you think those on the corner NY rappers/hustlers would have given you a full mixtape of original material that they paid to make out of there pocket for free in say..04 ? they would have looked at you crazy and felt insulted.
it was easier in that regard from a Southern rapper from the trap to give away a full tape of original material because all they had to do was get a 15 hard beats from up and coming producers and rap about dealing in your own way with joints that would bang in strip club which would help them move units independently out their car in the parking lot of the strip club..more was expected from an up north guy..they were asked to be more well rounded and the lack of a Tunnel etc for them really showcase and test their sounds.
feel like i'm just rambling now but i'll say definitely when they started getting out hustled, outworked by southerners..who realized in this day and age along with the internet they don't need that NYC co-sign and when they mixtape game started to change along with lack of a real main hip-hop club in NY.
most new rappers would bite your hand off for a feature from Jay or Cam though.
When lil wayne became "best rapper alive"
yet at the same time he was claiming himself as honorary member of a NY rap crew in Dipset.
the same dudes that helped put the tri-state onto rappers such as Lil Flip, T.I., Young Jeezy (they planned to an album or mixtape before Juelz & Weezy if i remember right.) when they were on their come up.
