ny planted the seeds to their downfall.
by not, eliminating culture thieves from drawing, in the Mecca.
then endorsing the culture thieves past a point of no return.
when, they were originally juxtaposed against said culture thieves.

after, that it was the slippery slope to where we are now.
then, on top of that....
ny has not created a new beatmaker, to take the helm.
after, the last guard of producers.
to create diversity in sound to their landscape.

In addition to what has already been said, NYC started to lose their spot as urban trendsetters. Back in the day they were ahead of most the country when it came to fashion and music. NY rappers were rocking stuff that everyone else wasn't. I remember rocking Yankee fitteds in the mid-late 90's because New Eras hadn't blown up and Yankee caps .were the only ones that you could get in a whole bunch of different colors.
Then with the internet and whatever other factors the rest if the country started to catch up. NY ain't got nothing nikkas haven't seen yet, u don't have to go there to hear the newest music and exclusive mixtapes. The best ball players aren't coming from NY anymore.
Other than accents, crowdedness and over-cockiness, NY is just like everybody else now

when 50 ethered everybody in NY
and couldnt hold the weight 50 destroyed the main players in new york besides puff and jay
with all the heads of the big crews being destroyed = no new protege's
mean while the south had all the bosses they put out protoges and had the ear of the youth

Probably when they stopped being the best by far..
NY rappers's "weight" was not only based on Hiphop originally being NY Culture but the fact that they were they were like 80% of the game and also by far the best.

Over time hiphop spread and generalized into urban culture, influence from different parts of the nation started becoming relevant so it was a pretty natural evolution. It's impossible to pinpoint when, it was a smooth transition.

after 2006.

Papoose, Saigon, and joel ortiz's were the last of a dying breed.

But every year there's one NY rapper that the hip-hop media attempts to hype up as "the next big thing"

I look at it like this:

EAST & WEST were the dominant SUPER POWERS

SOUTH & MIDWEST had superstars but regionally were not as dominate as E & W

After the Wars the LANDSCAPE BECAME ALTERED THE SURVIVORS WENT ON TO

ENJOY SUPERSTAR SUCCESS WHICH TURNED POP MORE OR LESS....REGIONALLY

NEW YORK UNDERWENT MAJOR CHANGES RUDY GIULIANNI THE DA WHO BROUGHT DOWN

CRIME LORD NICKY BARNES AND OTHERS BECAME MAYOR AND PRETTY MUCH DESTROYED

THE GRITTY STREET ELEMENT THAT NEW YORK WAS KNOW FOR ...BY FLOODING THE

STREETS WITH AN ARMY OF NAZI POLICE.....

MEANWHILE HIP HOP NEEDED THAT HOOD shyt AND WHO WAS LEFT THEM COUNTY nikkaS DOWN SOUTH AND

AND IN THE MIDWEST ...SHOWED THE REST OF THE COUNTY HOW THEY PUT IN TWERK

NOW ITS NOT REALLY A REGIONAL ANYMORE .....THE GAME IS WIDE OPEN

nikkaZ CAN EAT FROM ANYWHERE NOW...THATS WASSUP

BUT THE PEOPLE ARE WAY MORE DUMBED DOWN THESE DAYS

NOTHING IS ORIGINAL REALLY EXCEPT FOR ALL THIS NEW fakkitRY NOW....

when new york rappers dumbed down to the lowest common denominator & the tristate stopped producing hot producers. this is the real answer, everything else is fluff.
