This is what I was thinking.

If it were me I would not go to Howard just for the sake of HBCU. Like what are they offering….

Howard has probably the best business program amongst HBCUs and has good engineering too. Also, Howard is probably one of the few HBCUs where communications and visual arts majors do well (ie Chadwick Boseman and others). But yeah, if you don't know what you are going to do you will be in debt with few good options.

2. A number of HBCU already have less strict admission standards however I dont think loosening standard is a good idea. You need high standards as college education needs students who take it seriously and are academically capable of learning the material.

Yeah this is true. There are more than a few HBCUs with open admissions and their graduation rates are atrocious. Like less than 30%. Over 50% of kids don't get a degree and just a bunch of debt. No bueno.

There's a reason why I keep posting this. Consider this is pre-school. Imagine what YEARS of this type of behavior does to a black kid and his view of school or even more, HBCUs.

I went through a lot of shyt from teachers, especially black teachers. Thankfully, God gifted me an ego bigger than the sun so anyone talking down to or insulting me, I immediately saw them as a blithering retard (still do). Not all kids can be as whacked out in the head to pull that off and use that to their advantage. :francis:

You preach from a place of victimhood so I don’t expect you to put much effort in the first place. For the record I’m not denying that fukk shyt is ever not uttered but that caveat isn’t the whole story

A lot of these posters seem to base their lives off of news articles and statistics. I wonder do they even reach out to see what programs/networks are available to help them achieve their goals where they live. Here in Chicago a lot of the fraternities have programs available for black men who are interested in college while they're in high school. My son was helped by a program the Alphas set up. I also made sure he filled out his scholarship/grant letters weekly to get as much free money as possible. Some of these brothers aren't being completely honest about their situation.

1. NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers) has plenty of bridge programs in STEM already. Not to mention summer programs by big corporations. Legacy Civil rights orgs also college readiness programs too.

2. A number of HBCU already have less strict admission standards however I dont think loosening standard is a good idea. You need high standards as college education needs students who take it seriously and are academically capable of learning the material.

3. Also there are plenty of scholarships you can get to lighten the cost of tuition, ranging from Academic full rides to ROTC etc.

The infrastructure is already in place for most of these things to encourage college enrollment. I think the real issue is a lack of interest, simply not knowing about these opportunities or myths about college being too expensive or worthless.

When you hear your favorite influencer say “College is a scam” or “I dont use my degree at all” on social media why would you expect someone to try to go.

Most people don’t know about or have access, or even know they want to be an engineer, and not all programs build the bridge you think they do, i was in upward bound ( a well known black college prep program in Chicago) they take a shinning to a couple kids and push them, but honestly it was just me at the university of Chicago wasting my Saturdays doing extra homework and my summers learning hs subjects all over

I can’t even find a website for legacy civil rights joint

Some have laxed admissions not all, and for some kids that means the world because they get a shot at college, but like everything in life it’s on them to perform, just like, because kids hit a certain requirement they will some how graduate(to me) and learning material is so relative, to learning style and material

You can apply for multiple and still don’t get said scholarships again relative

I don’t think it’s there, most folks don’t even know degree options and paths, i remember some football kids had a degree from Maryland ( i forget the exact study) but with that degree in that shyt had so many pathways, and I’m sure if multiple football players have it, it’s a relatively stress free degree

College is very expensive which is why even white folks are complaining on the student loan debt

College is worthless if you don’t have a plan, and pathway for your degree to get you to a good job, and get you paid, and unfortunately many of us don’t know (see above thought with the degree from Maryland)

That's good to know. I wonder how much of this information is communicated to black high school students. I noticed that more often than not, it was communicated to black girls but not black boys. Even more so, information about truly viable careers (professional) was not communicated to black children overall. Programs that make it easier to get into things like med school like the JAMP program, the little tricks to game the system, the schools that are 6 year programs instead of 4 + 4 year or the ways to graduate early are not really given to these students. It's sad really. I would help students with this stuff back when I tutored but I don't think even those who are supposed to know, know this stuff.

Above the fray.
Correct.
No one will make programs for us but us.
No one will mentor us but us.
No one will start pushing & funding campus visits for us but us.

We can keep complaining or we will start doing for our boys. Simple as that. No one else will care.
The only correct viewpoint, as far as I'm concerned. With this view, we are inclined at ACT to try examining and addressing the issue in multiple ways.

The other view points lead to finger pointing /sitting on hands and doing nothing.

Great post. A lot of these programs that people talk about aren’t easily accessible.

This is one reason I focus on reaching out to younger boys, and letting them know what I do, showing there’s different paths to take when it comes to obtaining education and wealth. I was blessed. I was in different programs as a youth, and even being in the church; I was around older men who were professionals. Also, the biggest thing for me was my pop is an engineer himself. I said I wanted to be that at 9 years old, because my daddy was one.

Us black men that are actually out here doing honest work, living righteous(or atleast trying) need to get to these black boys more. There’s some other stuff I could say, stuff that’s more along the subject of morality and values, but I’ll save that for another topic lol.

that's exactly what I mean. :francis:

Culture encourages a lot of pipeline to prison imagery and messaging.

and it ain't a coincidence either, but that's another topic.

Eh

Black man here, not in prison.

It's not culture, idek what culture means in this context.

It comes down to parenting.
