Are haitians the diaspora that kept closest to their African roots?

Yeah vodun is definitely a fon/ewe tradition.

Iirc yoruba people have a very distinct religion with various dieties , although most modern day yoruba people are christians.

Anyway, I think people see how poor Haiti is and how dark skinned most of the people are and they automatically assume that they are closer to african culture than most blacks in the west but like you said that's not true when you look deeper into the culture.

Yep, I think that is the reason too. Like I said genetically that may be the case.

I do think haitians as a whole have retained more 'african culture' than most of the other carribean islands.

I personally think Afro-Cubans would give them a run for their money in that department.

Heck Cubans STILL speak in Yoruba when they do their Orisha dances/prayers. I think Haiti may come second in the Caribbean.

Haiti is the most stereotypical "African" culturally speaking, West Indian nation hands down but Cuba is the most "African" culturally speaking in the entire Carib. When you throw in South America it goes

1.Cuba
2.Brazil

3.Haiti

...to me Cuba and Brazil are on a different level from Haiti overall.

The group typically referenced by researchers for AAs and the disporan are Nigeria and Ghana, which is whereabouts the bulk of slaves originated.

I am trying to figure out how a Haitian dude is telling AA's where their ancestors are from; when African Americans already know where most of their ancestors are from.

@Akan

That Wordpress site is cool. Got any other sites we should be reading?

I know of a few more, but they are not coming to my memory right now. I am kind of tied up right now with work, but as more of these threads pop up; I will list the ones that I can recall.

Funny enough when I was looking at this slave log web site (granted their data doesn't represent all of the logs of slave ships during the Transatlantic Slave Trade) but I noticed an insane number of the Slave Ships leaving the Winward Coast were going to Cuba, but I believe that is because Cuba abolished Slavery late as hell (I think 1886) and in the grand scheme of thing that wasn't long ago (many of us probably have a great grand parent born in the 1880s), so essentially it makes sense how they were able to retain Culture, being that they had "recent" African Populations.
