Are haitians the diaspora that kept closest to their African roots?

So do all peoples in the African diaspora. For example, Jamaicans have Igbo proverbs in their sayings and words like 'obeah'. But, Cubans and Brazilians speak actual African languages.

Majority of Cubans don't even speak Lucumi:stopitslime:.

I agree with Brazilian part but I'm going to have to see more receipts on the majority of Cuban culture overall being more African than Haitian culture.

Those questions aren't the questions genetic ancestry geneticists are trying to answer :francis:

Think about it this way. The Yoruba, Dahomey and Asante engaged in conflict with each other in the 18th century.

The Fulani invaded Yorubaland in the 19th century

The Western Igbo claim that they hail from the Kingdom of Benin

Ibibio and other Niger Delta groups took a lot of Igbo slaves who intermingled in their population groups

There's no way a genetic test that has the general area of 'NIGERIA' is gonna be able to tell you what your ancestry is

I think that you are misunderstanding how AncestyDNA does testing. I linked how they do their testing. They test for a region.

Believe it or not; the Asante are some of the easiest people to test; because they can easily be tested against Brong and Baoule of the Ivory Coast and Ghana. The Asante; Baoule and Brong have the same genetic markers, because they are Akan people and they are all related and are from the Bonoman empire.

The Fulani and Yoruba would just be tied to Nigeria. The Yoruba would also be tied to Benin. Ibibio and Igbo are just going to be tied to Nigeria.

So they are not testing for a specific tribe; they are actually testing a region and they ascribe it to a country. Part of the testing goes back to questioning the Africans as to what tribe they belong to and how long they have been in the region.

So don't get caught up on the national borders. The scientist testing actually goes to region and a Yoruba person in Ghana is going to have the same markers as a Yoruba person in Benin and Nigeria.

Haiti's culture is definitely more closer to African culture than Cuba. :mjlol: One of our most revered figures, Toussaint Louverture was literally the son of an African King from Arda.

Our King ( Henri Christophe ) even had warriors from Dahomey ( Benin ) come to help in Haiti.

you realize that Cuba was getting fresh african slaves all the way into almost the 1870's?

The slave trade to Cuba began earlier and lasted longer than in the rest of the Americas/ Caribbean. While Africans did not arrive in the U.S. until 1619, and Brazil in 1538, they were brought from Africa to Cuba as early as 1521. The trade ended in the U.S. in the 1860s and in Brazil in the 1850s, but in Cuba lasted until the late 1870s.

Okay. I'm still not seeing how the majority of Cuban culture is more African than Haitian Culture.

I'm Igbo. I'll take the test one day to check its accuracy

You should take the test. Read the article that I linked and it will show you how some of the Africans that took the test turned out. The one thing that the article points out is that Nigerians are admixed; and sometimes the tests came back closer to people in other regions. Some Igbo's that tested came back closer to Cameroon/Congo; while some of the Yoruba that tested came back closer to Togo/Benin.

I find that odd because the Igbo and Yoruba are part of the same language family grouping and they split off from each other 2000-3000 years ago.

I wish genetic scientists would be interesting in discovering the origins of a country as admixed and diverse as Nigeria.

Gedmatch calculators can give you more specifics on tribes, but if they don't test for a specific tribe then they will put you in the tribe closest to the one that they tested. Here are my results from one of the calculators that I used.

# Population (source) Distance
1. african-american 5.44
2. african-caribbean 11.1
3. fang 11.6
4. kongo 12.97
5. kaba 13.71
6. bamoun 14.74
7. mandenka 18.87
8. hausa 19.64
9. bantusouthafrica 21.22
10. igbo 21.51
11. pedi 21.84
12. bambaran 22.1
13. brong 22.87
14. nguni 23.36
15. dogon 23.84
16. yoruba 25.14
17. yoruba 25.2
18. fulani 25.61
19. yoruba 25.83
20. bantukenya 29.03

Gedmatch shows that the African Caribbean component is for ancestors from Barbados, Dominican Republican and Puerto Rico. I was able to verify separately through a family tree that I had family from Trinadad Tobago and Barbados.

Meanwhile Haitians cut the overwhelming european influence as of 1803.

I said before that alot of contemporary things people think are true or authentic African culture are continental African takes or flips on new world black concepts/culture.

Yup since 1900, the cultural exchange between the Motherland and the US, Brazil and Cuba is stronger than any other part of the Diaspora this side of the ocean.
