That just proves that Stephen was good
#2 to his boss but the fact is Candie was the main villain of the movie cause he was the plantation owner and he was the one they had to get through to get the deed for Broomhilda. Stephen didn't buy Broomhilda and put her in that situation Candie did. The name of the plantation was Candie Land, not Stephen land. Candie was the boss. Also I think QT would be sending the wrong message making The Black Guy the main villain of a Slave Movie. I think Stephen ended up that way cause of the twist the story took after what Dr. King did. Also they still would of gotten away if not for Dr. King's arrogance more than anything else. Stephen indirectly gave Django new life cause sending him to the mine was way better than castration.
It may seem that why because we all know what happens at the end of the movie. But in the context of the story, Calvin Candie became the evil that Dr King tried not associate with. Before they reached Candie Land, Dr King never experience first hand the conditions the slaves endeared. That's why after they agreed (by gun and shot gun point
) on the sale of Broomhilda, the act of seeing a slave ripped apart by dogs stuck with him. Even during the scene Calvin and Django talk about:
Calvin: you're German friends seems a bit unnerved for trying to get into the Mandingo fighting business
Django: He just never dealt with Americans before
I'm paraphrasing but it was something along those lines. Those who have seen it twice will confirm for me. He just couldn't stand doing business with a man of that nature. Shaking hands meant he agreed with the whole practice which he didn't. Now the reason he put the blam blam to Calvin was because Calvin was basically humiliating him.
And just because Calvin owned Candie Land doesn't mean much. Stephen was in charge of keeping the slaves in check. He had power over them. He was the slaver that Django said was lower than low. Calvin ain't give a fukk about Broomhilda. At dinner he was ready to deal her away. And it wasn't gonna be for no $12,000. It wasn't until Stephen brought it to his attention then Calvin was like cool, ima get these son of bytches money.
In the hindsight of the movie, Stephen did give Django a new lease on life. But who know in 1858, this nikka would
A) convince these superior white folks that he was a bounty hunter
B) Kill said white folks with their own guns
C) Come back riding on a horse and lay the murder game down quite flat
Stephen wanted Django to suffer until the day he dies. That's why he sent him to the mine. But after they buried Calvin and Django was waiting for them at the big house, Stephen was like
And let's be honest. There were people who let their own folks hang in the sight of their superiors since man roamed the planet. Whether it was the blacks, Romans, Turks, whoever, if you follow history, people have been selling out their own kind for ages. As humans, we are our own worst enemy. No one can kill us like we kill ourselves. I hate the white man as much as the next nikka, but ill put a bullet into a nikka selling me out just as i would these crackas
