Are you really saying the beats are making you not like rap?

Slaughterhouse held me down this year, the mood, beats, and concepts/lyrics came just in time. I only expect 3 or 4 good albums a year now, back in the days you can get 3 or 4 good albums a month.

Nah I never said I don't like rap anymore :whoa: but yeah I feel it's harder now for me to found beats (yes, in my case beats are extremely important as to whether I'll like a track or not...I can bear with mediocre lyrics but the beat gotta be banging) that make me go :gladbron:

Not to knock OP but most dudes with this thought are
A) Never was really into the Genre
B)Of Non Black Descent
C) Got into the music in the early 2000 period and now the fad is fazing

I was expecting some kind of answer like this, happy it took this long tho.
A) Been listening "seriously" since 93, but been around HH since 90-91 I'd say (I'm 32). (When I mean HH, I mean the rest too, even if less seriously than rap)
B) I'm mixed (I know that means non-Black to some of y'all, but whatever)
C) See A.

If you don't have the SpaceGhostPurrp Mysterious Phonk instrumentals, get them immediately. The album with vocals is unlistenable because Purrp is such a horrible rapper, but the instrumental album stays in my CD changer because it's so impressively done.

Also, two primer comps made about a year or two back:

One from the Space Age Hustle Tumblr in 2010, which coined the name "Cloud Rap," the concept and tracklisting of which can be found here: Space Age Hustle Presents ’3 Years Ahead:The Cloud Rap Tape’ | Southern Hospitality (Link will be in my profile)

The other is a comp made by Green Ova last year which is 2 discs of nice, spacey action. Also will be in the profile.

I wish they were both instrumentals, but what can you do. Both are good primers, if you have the time.

:obama:

drifting away ? :childplease:

what kind of lame shyt is this

go listen to rock or whatever we're good over here

Big Biz your actually one of my main suppliers but it aint about "going to listen to rock", I'm just sharing some thoughts will y'all.

Guess it happens to some people. I don't get the appeal of the electronic/dubstep/techno whatever it's called music. It's like there's no soul or spirit to it, so it's strange for me to see so many hip-hop fans go to that. I know I sound like a dumbass saying that but that's a comment from an outsider looking in. I guess if that's what massages your brain best and what everyone around you listens to. Good for you.

I might go weeks listening to funk or rnb, maybe some jazz once in a while but theres nothing like throwing on a hip-hop beat and just listening to someone rap. It's like I'm home. I don't care what they're rapping about just as long as it sounds good. I like the sound of words rhyming or just listening to someone black out. Or playing the Hot 97 State Property session or the old Bobbito sessions (CoC are my favorite). Or getting in the whip and bumping some Gucci or Dro, or getting classy and listening to some Jay or Ross, or some struggle music with Pac and Boosie, fukk there's so much music to listen to. Then you get into the all the old-school music and it's :ohlawd: shyt I'm barely listening to T.I. (I know T.I. isn't old-school btw :mjpls:) and dude has some bars.

You'll be back :jawalrus:

I understand what you're saying, and yeah those styles def have less "soul" than some forms of rap, but I guess it's all about individual tastes, even in rap even tho I love the jazz or blues influenced beats, I also love more experimental/electronic stuff like some Rza prod, El-P, Timbo, Swizz, Neptunes...

Nah breh, you just gotta grow your tastes a bit; evolve with the times. You're kinda sounding like those old folks who can't stand "these kids and their music." :flabbynsick:

But, I guess this happens sometimes, tbh. I used to be real into electronica, stepped away for a year or two, and then got right back into it. I say diversify your musical experiences, open your mind, and then come back to hip-hop, and I think you'll be right back into it.

Yeah I know it's what it sounds like, but honestly I try checking out new artists, and I do like some of them, but again it seems to me that is less diversity and less risk-taking now, especially with the beats. But yeah I've been looking around and I never stray too far away.

hey it's a big world. ain't no one forcing you to listen to hip-hop

Damn I'm just discussing here breh, no one said anyone's forcing me to listen to hip-hop :aicmon:

This...

But I don't listen to the type of music I did when I was younger as much....Like Chris Rock said, I love hip hop but I get tired of defending it...A lot of the shyt is so shallow, repetitive and meaningless that it's not even worth searching for the artistic worth in it...

I still get excited when I hear something different and refreshing, and I'll always bump the classics...

When did trap music become left field?

My bad, I meant the electronic kind of music that is based on trap-like instrumentals. Yes they just totally jacked the name.

Nah. I've been into rap since around '84, and while I listen to other stuff from damn near any genre you can think of, I'd say 95% of my music collection is rap.

Rap is arguably the worst it's ever been, but there is still a lot of good shyt coming out. No offense but if you ain't willing to dig for it then you wasn't much of a fan to begin with.

I can't even fathom not being "into" rap one day. :stopitslime::why: at me abandoning it because I got older. This is my generation's music.

Yeah. I'm only 20, so it's happening sooner than I'd thought. I still have a few guys I check for regularly(just got into Curren$y) and I'm really anticipating a few albums, but I'm definitely not as into it as I was a few years ago.

this thread again?

if the op is "drifting away" and just now exploring new genres he never had a diverse musical taste to begin with. I doubt he ever was a real HIP-HOP too. I primarily listen to HIP-HOP but I have never been limited to only rap nor have I felt stuck in a box. Thread starter just sounds like he got into hip-hop during one of the fad eras.

This made laugh

Breh i hear you but I think you haven't read what I've been saying in the thread. I've been digging quite a lot but it's just that I feel that you have to dig so much further now than just a couple years ago, and I find harder to find music that really feels like I'm listening to something new/original.

Maybe read the thread before answering breh, been in this since 93. And been listening to other genres ever since too, but more and more now.

I'm 25, and even I can't see myself listening to rap like I do now 10 years from now with wife and kids

I'll still check for some of the rappers I grew up on like nas, snoop, common, but no way in checking for the new gen. You can't be 30+ listening to chief keef talking that ignorant shyt

This sounds so stupid.

There is no way you are black bruh

There was more variety back then. You had the ignorant, the fun, the alternative and so on and so forth. You don't see much variety today. Its hard to find rappers who are different than the norm, and even when you do find it, they usually end up selling out or changing their sound to fit in. Lyrics are pretty generic now too. Even when rappers are rapping over electronic beats, they still stay talking about the same stuff the other rappers talk about. It's getting old. It's all starting to sound the same.

This is absolute Bullshyt. There is waaaay more variety now than there has ever been because of the internet
Difference is, they were creative with it, and could do it in a way, most of these new cats simply can't.

No they were not. It just seem new to you because you grew up on it.

Never really cared about beats, I focus on music that is authentic, which is the reason Nas, Eminem, and Scarface had quotables this year and not Rick Ross.

I understand where you coming from because I can't listen to a lot of music these days because I can't relate to the artists. I never had any hoe I wanted, never had a Maybach, never had bands and bands of money, never was having fun all the time. This is not creative at all.

I have no complaints about rap. The west coast is making a nice push with TDE and Nipsey Hussle, the south still putting out garbage music, and I wish the east coast was more diverse and active.

i'm hip hop forever since i was a kid, but in recent time i have been able to appreciate music outside of the genre which i was never able to do before

i dont know if thats what you mean, but if you a true music head which means you listening to music all the time, listening to the same type of music 24 hours a day 7 days a week no matter what genre is gonna have you at some point not seeing new music of that genre as fresh or different. i think thats what you're stuck at, i tried to veer away, but the bytch keep pulling me back in cause after a long day of work i need to hear some of my favorite rap songs

Drifted away a long time ago, I don't bother with new stuff, just try to get my hands on things I missed out on

pretty much, i stopped really chking for hip hop like that when i hit my mid 20s...

only listen to the older stuff, plus a lot of the funk/soul records that were the foundation of the genre
