I was using clippers but even then I'd break out because my hair was so coarse.

I'm now rocking a beard :yeshrug:

This is way easier for me.

Single razor, use mad alcohol before and after and razor bumps are gone many blades aren't made for black skin.

I read that getting razor bumps genetic

But
Shave with the grain
Short strokes
I use a hydro 5 razor and a double sided razor

Use a toothbrush to clean the hair out under hot water after each stroke
So u don't redistribute cut hair into your pores

Black skin isn't made for that 5 blade stuff. As soon as I tossed that razor bumps stopped.

Double edge

Straight razor

And cheap Bic 1 blade

And never got 1 bump

But I'm a chocolate nikka with enhanced dna so:manny:

Hair naturally curly
And hairline intact:manny:

We all have coarse hair.

Unless Lil Wayne was right, I can't imagine that your hair is any more coarse than other Black dudes. It's the tendency of our hair to grow in a curling fashion (and hook back into our skin) that causes the bumps, not the coarseness.

Well let's get right to it, I've been getting bad razor bumps and was wondering whats the best way to shave.

Are you supposed to shave with the grain? Against the grain? Does it even matter?

How do you know which is way with the grain or against it lol

I know yous guys are probably looking at the title like wtf but like many in the black community I grew up with out a pops so I had to figure out all this shyt myself brehs :mjcry: The struggle is real.

I've been using Gillette pro glide razors and a Philips Norelco architect to shape up my mustache and trim hairs if that makes any difference.
Go on Amazon and buy two things. Glycolic acid face wash by a company called touch. And glycolic acid toner by a company called the ordinary. Use the face was every other day or every couple days depending on skin sensitivity. Use the toner every night before bed. That shyt will change your life. But also pamper yourself. nikkas always rushing their shaves. Get that towel as hot as you can bear. Then hit your face with some preshave oil to condition the skin underneath and make the hairs more pliable. I personally use a straight razor to shave and line up my mustache/goatee with a wahl five star detailer. I cap that all off with prosaro aftershave for sensitive skin. That night it's the gylcolic wash, then toner, and a moisturizing cream before bed.

Damn, time really flies. I remember starting a thread on SOHH like a decade ago, getting a ton of advice on this, but none of it working.

The secret was: everyone's hair and face is different so there's no one-size-fits-all solution. You gotta look closely at your face, diagnose your issues then do a bunch of experiments till you see what works for you.

- Step 1 is to diagnose if you're dealing mainly with razor bumps (bumps from irritation) or ingrown hairs (bumps from your hair growing back into your face). I had the later, so all solutions where the hair got cut too close to my skin would end up with ingrowns by the next morning. Took me months of trying single blade razors (and even the Andis T-Outliner) to realize it wasn't working. Because I was able to mask the bad results by using something like Bump Stopper which basically just peels the top layer of your skin off (including the bumps - freeing the hair) so you're in an endless cycle of: ingrown bumps, flaky skin peeling off from bump stopper, shaving again, new ingrown bumps.

- Step 2 is to let your facial hair grow out until everything is completely healed. Get some sharp ended tweezers and 5x (or whatever) mirrors to free any trapped hairs. Don't pull them out of your skins just free them from the bump then dab some bump stopper.

- Step 3 is take hair clippers in open mode, trim your face, then observe the results after a couple of days. If you're in the clear you can close the clippers a little more, trim and observe again. Keep going till you find your optimal length. Now I have particularly coarse type-4c hair that lays pretty flat on my face when it's short, so contrary to popular opinion I have to use the clippers against the grain for it to properly cut while still not cutting too short.

My greater point is this: the people responding to these posts (including me) have a diverse set of hair and a diverse set of problems. You gotta just experiment.

2 OPTIONS....

1. GET AN EXPENSIVE ELECTRIC RAZOR.

2. IF YOU DONT WANNA DO THAT
GET A STRAIGHT EDGE RAZOR....

WASH YOUR FACE WITH WHAT EVER PRODUCT YOU USE
AND MAKE SURE YOU REPEATEDLY RINSE WITH HOT WATER.

TAKE THE STRAIGHT RAZOR
AND SHAVE AGAINST THE GRAIN WHILE YOUR FACE IS STILL WET.

NO CREAM OR NOTHING
JUST WET SKIN.

YOULL GET A VERY CLEAN SHAVE
AND WONT BUMP UP.

DO NOT PUT ALCOHOL ON YOUR FACE.

Nah man. That's where I went wrong for so many years. There's a whole spectrum of hair coarseness amongst black men. I could probably follow your regimen and still break out.

https://blacknaps.org/know-your-hair-type/

It's the tendency of our hair to grow in a curling fashion (and hook back into our skin) that causes the bumps, not the coarseness.
I feel like the coarser the hair the more easily it penetrates back in.

Did anybody ever offer suggestion that addressed the root problem though?
Have you tried the electric toothbrush / buf puff method? Continuously loosening the growing hairs helps prevent them from hooking back into the skin.

Our hair is naturally curly, so it doesn't grow straight out and has the tendency to hook.
