Construction alone is vital to the nation's infrastructure. Not only are new homes and buildings constantly being built, they also need maintenance for the duration of their existence.

Immigrants coming over in the 80s brought their kids with them, who were also mostly illegal. They worked jobs for wages no American would work for. They cornered the market and their kids became the construction foremen, crew leaders, head chefs etc.

Now those kids, in their 30s now are starting their own businesses and looking out for their own.

They're also providing a better life for their own kids, who are teenagers now. But you nikkas won't get it until 3rd generation Mexican immigrants start taking over tech and healthcare. Jumping on the coli fuming about hospitals requiring you to know Spanish to be an RN, or IT companies requiring you to know Spanish because of the sheer amount of Hispanic businesses they service

Black workers have lost blue-collar jobs at about the same rate as whites in the county, but seem to be less likely to find replacement work, according to the UCLA analysis.

Seventeen percent of black workers were unemployed on average from 2011 to 2014, compared with 9% of white workers, according to the report, published Tuesday in conjunction with the Los Angeles Black Worker Center.

A quarter of black workers who had a high school degree or less were unemployed, compared with 14% of white workers.


Education helped bridge that gap, but didn’t erase it. Nine percent of black workers with at least a bachelor’s degree were unemployed over that period, compared with 7% of white Angelenos.

“Los Angeles is in the throes of a Black jobs crisis,” the report says.

“Black workers are often the last hired and first fired,” says Lola Smallwood Cuevas, the founder of the Los Angeles Black Worker Center. “If we don’t address the crisis, we will have a city and a county where there are no black workers.”

Construction has offered a lot of new jobs to Angelenos over the last several decades, but those positions don’t seem to be going to black workers. There were 7,012 black workers in construction in 2014, 2,000 fewer than there were in 1980, according to census data analyzed by UCLA.

That 23% drop compares with an overall increase of 120,840 construction workers of all races during those 34 years, or 80%.

Those new jobs aren’t going to white workers, either. There were nearly 40,000 fewer white construction workers in Los Angeles in 2014 compared with 1980, a decline of about 40%.

Latinos, however, have significantly upped their representation. There were more than 185,000 Latino construction workers in Los Angeles in 2014, five times as many as there were in 1980.

September’s 3.7 percent unemployment rate, a nearly 50-year low, is helping all U.S. workers, but it’s especially beneficial to disadvantaged groups that have struggled to land jobs -- like black teenagers.

The jobless rate for African-Americans age 16 to 19 fell from 20.1 percent to 19.3 percent last month, the lowest on records dating to 1972. Although monthly data can be volatile and the sharp decline could be partly reversed in coming months, black teenage unemployment has been trending down since peaking at 48.9 percent in 2010.

“As the labor market tightens, employers have to look to workers they ordinarily don’t (consider), like black teens,” says Dean Baker, co-founder of the Center for Economic and Policy Research. Overall black unemployment fell from 6.3 percent to 6 percent in September, a tad above the record low 5.9 percent reached in May.

There are several reasons that black teen joblessness remains well above the broader 12.8 percent teenage unemployment rate. Blacks still face discrimination and often lack a network of contacts who can provide job referrals, says Heidi Schierholz, economist at the left-leaning Economic Policy Institute. They also may live in lower-income neighborhoods that don’t have good access to transportation to job sites, she says.

Some have been “raised in environments of trauma, which has significant effects,” says Willa Seldon, a partner in the Bridgespan Group, a nonprofit that fights poverty.

And while a disproportionate share of black teenagers may lack college or even high school degrees, “Studies show that these teens have the skills but not the credentials,” says Seldon. “More employers have begun hiring these youth and have found them to be great employees with higher retention.”

The teenagers often work in part-time retail, restaurant or warehouse jobs while still in high school or similar full-time positions after graduating.

Also look up productivity, structural unemployment, technology unemployment and temporary vs permanent job employment.

She ain't said too much wrong. It's wild that's she's actually had some of the most balanced and realistic takes on crime and homelessness in CA that I've seen in a while. Most on the left won't even acknowledge that it's a major fukking issue. They'll just point to "capitalism" and won't present any actual ideas besides "safe injection sites" and "decriminalization".
Neither of which actually get to the point of what THEY THEMSELVES say the issue is.

I'm left-leaning, but even I'm aware that the proper answer for most things is somewhere in the middle.
