Without question hes one of the 10 best rappers who has ever done it

@Mephistopheles created perhaps the greatest thread in the history of the booth when he decoded a lot of ghosts rhymes, which to the untrained ear came across as gibberish but were in fact lyrics that were extremely layered and intricate and absolutely brilliant in its esoteric quality. It was a real eye opener for me in how much I've over looked just how amazing he is as an artist.

Great lyricist. Check.
Influence. Check. (see Action Bronson)
Star Power. Check. ("Im bout to save hip hop like Ghost did the Wu")
Quality of Albums. Check. (responsible for two of the greatest albums in hip hop history, and has a catalog that rivals pretty much anyones )

Yeah. His legacy is cemented at this point. He is the best MC from the most critically acclaimed group in hip hop.

Ghostface was in my top 10 but I've been bumping action bronson more then son lately... believe it or not. SMH plus his last project was a disappointment.

Ghost is incredible.

But he's not a Top 10 MC. As much as I love this dude's catalogue, It just wouldn't be honest of me to say he's that high on the list.

It's the same as if one ask who is your top 10 basketball players and you putting in guys like bill Russell and wilt chamberlain who you have never seen play. But the old heads dictate they importance where in contrast personally I don't think either of them would have been that great amongst better competition.

i was rockin with your initial statement but then you said this, and you didnt even need to.

what better competition? if you havnt seen them play, then how do you know how good their competition was?

and youre on the internet. youre just a click away from watching them ball.

I never said I never seen them play. I said people put them in they top 10 without seeing them play based on the basketball journalist who say that's they position.

I have watched plenty of film from them and I stand by my comment

But I'm not going to derail the thread with this. You shouldn't either

Rae and Gza >>>>>
Meth =
Are we talking lyricist or as a total artist?

Cause if we talking lyricist you can make the argument although I prefer ghost over meth and gza

But as total artist, ghost is by far the best wu member as most other wu members fell off pretty hard after they 1st project.

Ghost has Imo 3 clear classics (ironman supreme clientale and fishscale) and 3 more arguable classics that many hold in high regards (bullet proof wallets , pretty toney album, big doe rehab) and btw he has never dropped a totally wack project and it's only 1 other rapper we can say that for with an extensive work and that's 2pac.

Rae 1st album classic nothing close since. Same thing for gza and meth although beneath the surface was good.

Only wu member Imo that comes close to ghost is old dirty as he had 2 classics.

ghost is top 20.

1st 2 albums are CLASSICS.

but the joints after that are just okay albums that get gassed up on the internet.

it sounds like you didnt watch much because the competition amongst big men was alot tougher than its been for nearly 2 decades now.

Two things:

(1) while music is subjective there are certainly characteristics people try to use to when formulating GOAT lists because otherwise it would be nothing more than a popularity contest. There has to be some rhyme or reason to make your list or opinion more credible than the next. It's why people distinguish between their personal favorites and on objective assessment. And you all know it because we all do it in every single thread in here when debating where emcees rank. It is why no one ever called Nelly the best in the game. We were taking in a wide range of things beyond just his sales and popularity. But appeal is certainly a characteristic that must be taken into consideration.

(2) There is no conceivable metric by which Nelly is better than Ghostface who is all time great emcee and that shyt is worthy of a one month loss of thread-making privileges or only being able to see Yung Yogurt's posting history for 30 days.

Agree.

First, when you're talking best MC of all time, group work is included. It ain't the best solo album catalog ever. It's who's the best man on the mic in all iterations. So that includes his contributions to group albums & co-starring w/ Rae on both Cubans, where Ghost was such the standout on Cuban Linx that he leapfrogged mid-90s Deck to drop an album.

Second, Ghostface switched his style completely on 4 successive albums and remained for the most part consistent. Ironman was continuing his style from the guest spots & Wu solos, then he went into his abstract style on Supreme, then abandoned that to have an album of all concept & story tracks on Bulletproof Wallets (The problems with that album were all production & songs kept off/ changed for sample clearance but that is one of Ghost's best performances on the mic.) That album's reception & criticism had him step back lyrically on Pretty Tony but he rebounded with Fishscale which compiled all the styles he'd done before. And his Supreme Clientele style was so iconic that people a decade & a half later talk shyt about 'Ghost not making sense' when he dropped that style back in 2001 (meaning you can easily dismiss them as they're not even listening).

Third, The importance and influence of Ghostface. There's the influence as part of Wu as a whole. There's the influence of Cuban Linx, which blows up mafioso rap and inspires It Was Written, Doe or Die, Reasonable Doubt, etc... There's the influence of Supreme Clientele, which was a sample heavy album in the keyboard era when people were writing the sample off as dead. SC was the blueprint to the Blueprint's return to samples and inspired the next 5 years of production:

- Kanye West

Fourth, you've got an ear for beats. Ghost has stayed once of the most consistent emcees in the game who, while rapping over many different types of beats and never limiting himself, has always maintained a tremendous sonic backdrop to his rhymes. While there are arguments for better people on the mic, I don't think anyone else on the mic tops Ghost's ear for what he's rhyming on. And that's huge. Take whoever your favorite MC is and put him over Ghost's instrumentals and it's an immediate upgrade.

Fifth, you've got flow

you've got storytelling

?t=1m35s

you've got raw spitting

you've got emotions

you've got originality

Opinions are whatever and everyone's lists will be different, but I bet if you got a top 10 without Ghost, when you break it down some of those people aren't seeing Starks.
