The difference is
(1) If you want to state that GFK is better than MC Hammer because GFK has recorded more songs....Instead of neg repping you, I will state this...Yes, GFK has recorded more songs, but volume is not an indication of quality...

When you say "A is better than B" you are trying to compare the quality of A and B in the context of what A and B are ULTIMATELY designed to do, and how much A you have has NO bearing to its qualitative superiority over B...

To be specific, rappers are entertainers...The MAIN function is entertainment...Therefore, GFK having more songs is NOT an indication of whether or not he is a better entertainer than MC Hammer...

However, record sales are an indication of quality...If you consistently sell albums, then SURELY you have a product of quality that many people are willing to consume...

Therefore, number of record sold is a BETTER criteria than number of records recorded...

MC Hammer is a global icon...He was MORE successful with his craft than GFK will ever be...Anybody who neg reps me for making this assertion is a BONA FIDE IDIOT...

Good lord I wish I could neg this dude again right now

He's in my top 10 largely for his late 90s-Supreme Clientele run. Such a crazily unique rap style.

Plus for me he's the greatest story teller in hip hop. Better than Rick, Biggie, G Rap, Nas, whoever else you want to name

I understand what he wrote, but he clearly doesn't understand what I wrote, but I will take this opportunity to clarify my stance...

(1) I understand ULTIMATELY these threads come down to personal opinion...If someone believes Chief Keef is a better rapper than GFK, then there is just NO objective way of arguing against it...

(2) However, when someone states "GFK is Top 5...Do you agree or disagree" They are asking you to state your opinion, and you can give your opinion and provide a RATIONALE for tour opinion...This were things get INTERESTING...

(3) Some people will base their opinion on EMOTIONS and others (like me) will base it on OBJECTIVE CRITERIA...Therefore, my argument is this...

(4) Which opinion holds the most weight (A) one that is based on emotions or (B) one that is based on objective criteria...?

(5) In conclusion, I am not denying Meth's statement...However, his statement HOLDS NO WEIGHT in this thread, because OP asked us to "agree or disagree"...And I just to disagree based on OBJECTIVE CRITERIA and others are choosing to agree based on EMOTIONS...

(6) Even more interesting, if it is all subjective like Meth's suggests, then why did I get so many Neg Reps for my opinion...If it comes down to opinion, then why do certain members think it necessary to persecute me for having an opinion...? This behaviour is deep and shows us why we have so many wars in world...Religion is NOT blame...If you make a different choice, you will beat down until you make the consensus choice or die...But this a Higher Learning topic...

This is why I love Forums...They show a glimpse of human social politics...:win:

I hope this clarifies my stance

Let me tell you a story.

Around the time Nelly blew up I moved out to the suburbs. The vast majority of young white people had his debut....and not a single one of them could name a rapper besides Nelly.

That's the type of people you're letting determine all-time placement in hip-hop culture, based solely on the fact that they had $12 to buy an album.

So yeah, that's why you're getting neg repped. If I ran into a random young dude out here talking about Wayne is the GOAT because he sold 4 mill or some stupid shyt, I would just :heh: in his face and keep it moving. Because I expect that nonsense from these people. But you should know better.

I been into rap since '84. So I seen Hammer blow up first hand. And if you went to school talking about Hammer is the GOAT or better than Public Enemy or whoever based on your "objective criteria"....dudes would've had a field day with you.

SUBJECTIVELY speaking anyone you cot damn want could be in your top 10

OBJECTIVELY speaking no ghost ain't top 10. not even close. doesn't have enough classic records. his greatest contributions to hip hop were as a member of wu tang.

wu tang has a legit case for being top 10 but ghostface as a solo artist ain't sniffin it.

There's no such thing as objectivity in music. It's ALL subjective. This shyt ain't a sport. If I think he's top 10 then he's top 10. No one can tell me different.

I kind of get what you're arguing here. I agree with your point about entertainment. I also think an argument regarding a consistency in sales holds weight. Here's my problem with the sales argument though. Sales NEVER speak to the quality of the product. A person could buy an album without having listened to it before buying it and think it's the worst thing ever. For example, Jay and Eminem don't have an album that's sold less than 1 million copies. That being said, both of them have albums that even their most die hard fans consider to be wack.

Where a consistency in sales argument holds weight is that it shows that fans are still invested and interested in that artist. It's evidence (even if just a morsel of evidence) of the artist's longevity and impact. A consistency in sales isn't an end-all, be-all, but it can be a factor.

I've bolded the parts of your post that are subjective.

Dude, KRS 1 threw PM DAWN off the stage, and people loved it, and now the same KRS 1 is cosiging Drake who is pretty much running with PM Dawn's whole steez...

The game done changed...

Mc Hammer's legacy is UNDERRATED because of New York's stranglehold on the game during Mc Hammer's dominance...New York wants to act like BDK wasn't dancing all up in his videos and shyt...

This is a great thread, and I just want to jump in here and mention Mighty Healthy. Just off the strength of this one song there's a case to be made for GFK as top 10.

To me this is one of the greatest and most original displays of lyricism you'll ever find. The sheer profusion of abstract (but always highly charged and expressive) symbolic and free-associative lyrics you find in here is just insane. I feel like there are so many possible meanings you can get out of different parts of this track, it's like an awesome modernist painting.

:wow:

:patrice:

good point. this is why i never took people like mos def seriously, and now theyre running around cosigning the offsprings of rappers that they dissed back in the day.

your overall message is still screwed up tho, but good point.
