Do any of you work at a firm that has Affirmative Action Policies? Because I do. The firm definitely has definitely has lower standards for URMs (Under Represented Minorities). I didn't really believe it until I received a slide deck that showed the firm's recruiting strategy.
URM= Black and latino.
Add to that, the firm has a big "Diversity/inclusive" push, and employees who can show that they contributed to a "inclusive" environment will get rewarded with a better review, which usually leads to a higher raise.
Yet, even with all these policies and incentives, URMs make up probably less than 1-5% of all employees. I have 3 reoccuring teams, and I have helped with maybe dozens of other teams. I am also at the home office about once a month. From what I can tell, the company is about 40% Asian, and 50% white. My teams are mostly Asian. In fact, on my reoccuring teams, there is only one 1 white person per team, and everyone else (including myself) is Asian.
However, I do hear about URMs and their performance through the grapevine, and I never hear anything good. In fact one person was being talked about, and my boss (an Asian woman) said, " she must be some sort of a political hire". All the URMs have that stigma unfortunately. People expect them to fail or need extra help. I can't say anything about myself because I have never worked with URMs before. Interestingly, African immigrants are viewed differently than AA's. I don't think African Immigrants have any sort of stigma.
What's crazy, is that I rarely hear white people say anything about people like that. It's usually east asians that are vocal about their disdain for URMs.
So there is a cost to Affirmative action. Without it, I don't think there would be any URMs at my company besides the very rare URM high achiever, or African Immigrants. However, since lower quatlity people get through using the URM lower standard, they are seen as being incompetent and less trust worthy. You would have to weigh the costs and benefits.
