advanced stats are amazing in baseball, that much is true. baseball is all about stats anyway as there is really no extending circumstances like in bball or football.

then theyre second best in football because they help to see the big picture since most people dont get it while just watching

they're least relevant IMO in basketball because of different lineups on the floor and very situational circumstances. also add the fact that individual players dominate much more in football and you dont really need advanced stats to see the whole picture. theyre good for looking at average players efficiency tho.

in baseball you can make a trade based almost purely on advanced stats tho
this is pretty much my feeling as well

they are of some use in basketball and football, but you really cant base shyt off that because of different circumstances. Player B could have a better PER because he shares the court with Player B, but it doesnt show up in the stats.

It does not take into account shots not taken and passes made and not made.

And in football there are millions of things that go on in a play.

in baseball, its the most individual sport of all our sports and its based purely on stats so you can play with numbers there.

advance stats will show a bench player with some sort of high rebound rate against scrubs and 2nd lineup:dead:

The statsheet watches EVERY game. Your eyes don't.

The stat sheets don't tell the whole story in basketball and football.

If we're going by PER, Kevin Love is one of the five best players in basketball. Nobody in their right mind actually thinks he's better than Dwight Howard. I would argue he's still not better than Dirk Nowitzki or even Chris Bosh, but based on PER, he is.

Well going by PPG, Kevin Love is one of the five best players in basketball too. It's not an advanced stat vs basic stat thing, none of these stats stand alone and tell an error proof story. It doesn't mean they don't have value.

well PER is usually biased towards big men. I don't know if I'd use that as an example, but advanced statistics can make Carl Landry look better than Kobe, so I get the gist of what you're saying.

The worst statistics are the ones that compare you to a player that doesn't exist.

You can blame John Hollinger.

Not to mention a lot of people pick and choose which stats make their arguments better anyway. No use in arguing with a stat geek.

The funny thing is, John Hollinger watches more games than just about all of the people that write him off as a stat geek.

I'm not going to claim to know exactly how PER works, but it's funny when people say "fukk stats, Kobe scored 81 in a game" like that isn't also a stat.

I don't get the hate, they're FAR more accurate than the usual PPG, RPG, APG, shooting %

no said ever said they're perfect or that they should be used as a substitute for actually watching games, but they certainly do a better job of supplementing what you may or may not have seen

:manny:

I think the main detractors of advanced stats are butthurt casual fans who look at the box score and say "bu bu but my favorite player averaged a lot of points this season, doesn't that mean he's the best" while not examining shyt in the proper context

And here is where the nonsensical arguments start, PER doesn't say who the best player in the NBA is, it's an acronym for PLAYER EFFICIENCY RATING. It clearly in it's own description doesn't say who the best is, just who is more efficient than the next.

Exactly, it's the people who don't understand what the stats mean, how they're formulated and what they're meant to be used for...that are the first ones saying advanced stats are useless.
