On some real shyt, though. I couldn’t imagine being a professional prize fighter at this level. Most men will be in a fight at some point in their lives, but it’s a spur of the moment thing. There’s nothing spontaneous about high level prize fighting: contracts, media obligations, etc. All the while knowing there’s a man that’s been training to hurt you specifically in X amount of days, studying your deficiencies, strengths, and looking to dispel you in front of the eyes of the viewing public. That’s a big psychological weight for anyone. People say Spence looked “off” or something before the fight. Naw, that was a man walking headlong into a battle that he knew he was ill prepared for, but he walked toward it anyways.
He said something in a Boxingscene article a few days ago that I’ve never heard him state. One of the things I appreciate about him is his candor, but he said as a fighter you envision all the possible outcomes of the fight. You even envision scenarios where you get beat up, but he doesn’t think that will happen to him this fight. In my mind, that tells me he had a feeling it wasn’t going to go well for him, because despite his overall candidness—I’ve never heard him say anything like that before. He’s generally brimming with confidence.
That ringwalk was Tupac sitting next to Suge in the black BMW knowing the end was near.
