Damn,

The job search process is one of the most stressful things ever. Make matters worse, my team is short staffed (two dudes just dipped) so I’ve had to shoulder their responsibilities because the other people on my team aren’t sharp like that to be 100%.

It’s Game 7 and I’m Lebron while everyone else is Mo Williams. To be fair we got another dude that’s like Kyrie but he’s at full capacity and Management ain’t tryna hire at the moment. :francis:

Silver lining though, I had a phone screen the other day with a big company in the DC area and dudes are saying they’d offer me (if hired) 50% more than what I’m making now. SHEESH!

They said by Christmas I should hear back with next steps. If they proceed then it’s game time :ohlawd:

The job market is relatively healthy so I could find another position quite quickly, but I’m looking for firms with brand name recognition. Why? You’re breh is trynna get back to Nigeria :blessed:

Nigerians sure do love that prestige for whatever it’s worth. But I’m angling to get back to Nigeria to and work (at least at first) at a top firm all while pursuing my own side ventures. So yea, I kinda need the big names of the Corporate world in the interim:manny:.

My plan is to flip positions by February, at latest March, and then take 2-3 weeks to travel to Nigeria and scout for my long term play, network and get a feeling of “whats on ground” before coming back to the US. That way, my plan in the US is based on the realities of what’s going on in Nigeria and I have a “checklist” of what needs to be done before making the switch.

Back in the states, in my new role, I’d acquire the relevant skills that would add to my profile, particularly for the Nigerian economy but also to me personally (public speaking, writing etc). This is all while living low-key and DEBT FREE (Jan 30th, 2019 is D-Day).

I’d build capital (20-30k?) for Nigeria and in the process, acquire my blue passport and get a killer GMAT score. Might take like one or two trips. Say South Africa and Brazil. A little fun never hurt

Anyway, by mid-late 2020 I’m two feet in Nigeria with some cash, a good skillset and the mentality to grind it out:wow:

Perhaps my opportunity is in Corporate Nigeria? Well, then a year “internship”at a firm of interest (African Finance Corp, Central Bank of Nigeria, MTN, Glo etc) then off for an MBA knowing when I go back to Nigeria even if I take out student loans, my lower cost of living plus parity in income will allow me clean off the loans in no time. I’d still hustle something on the side.

Perhaps my opportunity is in entrepreneurship? Well, then I’m in there and ready to grind it out. I’d have some start-up capital to get into it. I’ve already put a business plan together for agribusiness and I have a good target market.

Anyway a young breh really tryna get it :ld:

My parents would tell me to plan on finding a potential daughter in-law in the process:ufdup::heh:

Gotta ask breh, why the strong focus on living in Nigeria again? Also, I am hoping to take a trip to Cape Town next year if I have shyt fall in place.

Yeah, don't think I'm gonna have time to fukk around with girls during this grind, but if they come they come, I ain't trying to lock down just yet.

That's why greatness is breh, it's by yourself, nobody else can make you be great. So I tell my parents to miss me whenever they bring up that shyt.

I enjoy RnD when it comes to software engineering; I think I might start pursuing AI and quantum computing.

Why Nigeria?

I was born there and have a good network there. Also, the opportunities in Nigeria are vast, especially if you have a good foundation to start from. America is stable for the most part, Nigeria still has so much to tap into, at least I believe. I'd rather get in young and really try my hand than to come back at say 45 years and wonder "what could have been".

Jesus Christ this has been an expensive ass month for me. I'm going to have to penny pinch the next few months to recover. Hopefully I can secure a solid raise and a decent bonus next year. And if management stops playing around I can get the promotion I deserve. Ride out another year and some layoffs then maybe get that staff engineer position I've been talking about. I need to get some more development experience under my belt though. I've been doing more ops and infrastructure work the past 6 months. Last week I wrapped up the last bit of code assigned to me so it's back to hunting for coding tasks.

So I get vested stocks every quarter with my tech job. RSUs

My company sold about a third of my vested stock this quarter to pay off taxes for them.

For tax purposes I've been reading a few articles telling me to sell immediately. Not only for tax reasons but also because I should diversify my portfolio.

If I sold I'd probably put some in an IRA but probably not any stock since I have little knowledge of trading.

Any advice appreciated.

If you're worried about the tax hit upon distribution, can you defer your RSUs? Perhaps until retirement?

If they are granted quarterly, you need to see how that works re long term vs short term capital gains, selling right away may cause a higher tax bill. And the whole sell immediately to diversify doesn’t always make sense. in essence, this is free money, it’s not like you’re investing your own into just one stock. If you work for a growing or strong company, you don’t need the cash, and you don’t have a higher rate of growth investment to use the cash for, I say hold.

My old firm (software) transitioned from perpetual licenses to a SaaS model, my RSU’s (and stock I purchased through espp) were based on a stock price of about $40-48 in 2016, held it until this year when the stock was trading for $120-130, that would’ve been ~$21k I would’ve left on the board from doing an immediate sell.

It's nice to see people in here getting it. I'm a controller here in downtown Chicago. I was helping my payroll specialist with something and I learned that I was the 5th highest paid person in the damn organization. I knew that I was high but it's not like I really pay attention to that. Not bad for a kid from Detroit who grew up in a single parent household though. To my Chicago brehs, we should chop it up once in a while on lunch.

YESS!! Secured a first round with the hiring manager. I was kinda spooked because over the initial phone screen I kind of stumbled a bit in my words. Wasn't as prepared as I should have been. I guess my resume looks good and is worth a shot. The Lord has blessed me with a 2nd chance :blessed:

The first round phone interview will be the first week of Jan so I'll use all of next week to keep practicing. If I advance, the 2nd round is a phone case interview. Very quant heavy. After that, if I advance, I'll come into HQ for a full "Power Day". 4 Cases (3 quant, 1 project design). I'll have lunch in between.

I'm pretty happy now because the ball is in my court and it seems like my decision to skip Nigeria this Christmas in lieu of securing a better job by Feb/Mar of 2019 is bearing fruit. Even better knowing that this employer is very competitive in the DC area, so if they are interested then I know I can get some other competitive looks elsewhere.

I'm also working from home all of next week :wow::ohlawd:

Bout to be cranking out these mock interviews and case studies

I land this then my 18-24 month plan is in full action.

advice would depend on what function/industry you're in. but for your hiring manager round:
  • read the JD thoroughly, be able to share an example for every bullet point in the description
  • know the company (check out recent news about it), it's competitors and reasons why you want to work there (what differentiates the company)
  • seems like you have cases, so practice with people in addition to casing yourself
overall, treat the hiring manager round with the same amount of effort and prep that you would for the final round. the better the impression you can make on the hiring manager, the better things go down the line as they already have a favorable opinion of you and can be the tie-breaker in case anyone else in your panel has reservations.

good luck!

:picard: that's a hell of a process. Are you a data scientist, financial analyst or something? Dora pretty much covered it. Make a good impression, be someone that they would want to work with. I've conducted a few interviews, not very many mind you, but on the behavioral side I want candidates to just be themselves. Don't tell me what you think I want to hear, don't fake knowledge or ability. It's actually pretty obvious when someone doesn't know what they're talking about. Give good explanations but keep your answers concise.

On the technical side, I personally don't care that much about 100% correct answer. I look for problem solving ability and tenacity. Can the candidate identify the core problem? Can they find a path to the solution? Are they willing to chase a solution that might not be the best - and are they aware enough to understand that it's not the best? Can they extract the necessary information to attack the problem and how do they get that information? Can they draw educated assumptions? All these questions come from what I experience myself day-to-day. If they have these tools then they can be successful in my area of software engineering and very likely successful everywhere else in the company. I can teach you a technology, I can't teach you to be a solid member of the team.

It's a Senior Analyst type role. Big data and finance if you will. I think the process is pretty standard for this sector. Usually 1-2 rounds and then a "Power Day" of interviews with problems to solve. The only twist is that this company does quite a few interviews over the phone I guess to streamline the process.

Thanks for your input. I plan to do what dora said plus really know my resume and be able to speak to it very very well. I have at least 1.5 weeks to prepare. I'm trying to focus on the first round and not jump ahead to the 2nd round quite yet. 1 step at a time.

Latter parts of 2018 got mad stressful but I still got two feet on the ground. Praise the Lord because honestly, some can't say the same. Without him I'd have been food in these streets. Praying 2019 starts off positively and I can go from there on out. Got my US citizenship in the works (finally filed, even though I was BSing for like 8 months and could have been naturalized by now) and potentially I land this new job with a significant pay bump. Should be debt free by early February at the latest. By my birthday in April my financial foundation will be air tight (took me a while to get to it, but better at 24 than later in life).

Once I transition roles I'll take a few weeks off to travel to Nigeria, scope out the economy, network and reflect on my mission in the US. Also de-stress a bit and visit family. I may try to sneak into SA, but that requires a visa and having a crystal clear date of when I plan on traveling which would be dependent on when I get a new position so TBD on that. If I can't slide into SA then def would hit up either Ghana or the East African Bloc (Kenya Rwanda and Uganda, most likely). 2.5 weeks would be sufficient for all that travel especially if I'm only doing Abuja and Lagos in Nigeria.
