With 2018 drawing to a close, let's reflect on the past year's progress, setbacks and look forward to 2019.

1. What/where did you well?
2. What/where did you fail in/fail? How do you look to improve?
3. What are your big goals for 2019? Any specific timeline(s) on which to achieve your goals?
4. What are you most excited about?

For me:

1. I think for the earlier part of the year I did a very good job at keeping to schedule. I was saving well, studying for my GMAT and working out pretty consistently. Maybe it was the New Year's energy or the fact that I was planning a big vacation out of country. Either way, Jan - Mar were solid months for me.

2. I think after I came back from my holiday I had no "big goal" I was working to so I kind of slacked off a bit. I took my GMAT right before I went on my vacation so when I came back I had nothing I was actively studying for. Long story short, I did one of the worst things one can ever do in this life: nothing. When you're doing nothing, you don't even know when your done. Kinda just coasted April-July for real. I did save up for a little Euro trip at the end of summer but that was about it. I've noticed I'm the kind of person that needs to keep to a tight schedule to ensure I have momentum moving forward.

3. A lot of big goals for 2019 (some of which will depend on the broader economy; there are emerging murmurs).
  • Anyway, first quarter, pay off all my debt. By mid-Feb I should be debt free totally. I'd been kinda BSing on this part but enough is enough. I want to know all my income comes to me and I don't want to worry about any bills or CC payments.
  • Also, by mid-Feb I should land a new role paying me about 25-30% more than I'm making now.
  • By April have at least 4 months expenses saved up. I've been keeping it at only 2 months as of late but I'll need to make that jump
  • Begin my Nigeria fund for when I look to bounce in late 2020 or so.
  • Take my 2nd (and hopefully last) GMAT. Either before summer, or before Christmas
  • Buy a new (used) car by early fall 2019. Depending on where my new job is located, I may have to speed this process up a bit
4. I'm really just most excited about "getting to it"

1. Making some significant impact as an entry level person. People on my team value my opinion and I have legitimate clout in a few areas. I'm doing well enough for people to be probing to see if I'd like to join the team as a permanent member. I've been able to pick up new concepts and technologies very quickly while on the job.

I'm making pretty good financial decisions. Even though I'm overpaying for housing I still can live comfortably. I put away my 10% every month, pay all my bills on time, I pay extra on my student loans to mitigate interest. I paid off 1 of 3 loans I'm carrying. At one point I was tempted to drop money on another car but the math didn't work out at all. I'm sure if I had been younger I might have gone with first impulse and I'd be struggling right now.

2. On a social level I'm still stuck on my shell. I can socialize, don't get me wrong, but I'm reluctant to put myself out there. I literally wake up, go to work, and go directly home, then repeat. I need to make some friends and/or get a girlfriend because I can get real lonely some days :franchit:. I think I'll just need to force myself to go to the park or something, just to get used to going out.

I need to commit myself to weight loss. I was exercising regularly for a while but then started making excuses on why I couldn't/shouldn't hit the gym. I know that when I'm in a set schedule I can keep it up. The problem is just getting the schedule in place. I may end up shifting my day forward so that I can work out in the mornings. No excuses if it's the first task of the day.

3. I'm looking to secure a promotion early on in 2019. I do enough to warrant it, I'm pretty sure my boss is aware. I just need to keep they conversation ongoing. The earlier the better because the pay bump might help me if I move onto my team permanently.

I'd like to get started on a master's in computer science. The company will pay for it, I just need to get all my ducks in a row first. The main thing is figuring out what to specialize in. I can't just go taking random classes like I did for undergrad.

Another tentative goal is to get on the team as a permanent member. I'd be doing it purely for the title. My work wouldn't change, financial structure is about the same. If I don't join then I want to look towards a decided systems engineer or software architect role. I personally don't like the idea of putting 10 years into software engineering and then meandering into the architect role. I feel it should be something I actively working towards. So I'll keep prodding my boss about it and if he finds an opportunity for me I'll take it.

Against better judgement I'm trying to get a project car. If my bonus is substantial enough then I might pull the trigger. If not then I have no problems waiting for the right car at the right price.

I'm looking to pay off another loan and make significant headway on the last one. I just got a pay bump so I may put even more towards it now.

I may take a serious look at buying some land. If nothing else just to have something tangible in my name. Me and a friend already talked about going half in on property but neither of us have the money to start that venture yet. I think if we can secure a condo for 300-400k tenants could carry that cost for us. Then we could pitch in some extra money and pay down the mortgage faster.

I guess I oughta make finding a girlfriend a goal :patrice:.

4. I don't think I'm excited about anything really. I've been taking things day by day and I'll continue to do that.

Bruh this thread is filled with so much wisdom, gonna be bookmarking a lot of this game in here while in my studies moving forward. Discipline = Freedom.

Also, quick question. What's ya'lls opinion on home buying vs renting at the moment. Not looking to buy a home at the moment but just wanted to hear some thoughts on when or when it's not a good investment.

I know right! Especially for ppl like me who don't really know who turn to for advice. I don't know anyone in corporate jobs or who went to college that I can ask advice. The counselors at my college just give generic answers. This place is better than reddit in alot of ways too!

1. Really did well for at least 7 months of this year taking the weight off and getting my cardio back up..dropping about 36 pounds and getting through weddings and vacations maintaining before weight crept up a little.
2. Credit card debt. Was on pace being completely free and ready to cut some of them up but some unexpected expenses came up that brought my balances back up :francis:
3. My big goals for 2019
  • Buy another property.
  • Put a ring on my lady.
  • Get rid of my credit card debt once and for all.
  • Try to get back on my steady boxing workout grind.
  • Slowly ease my way back into lifting again.
  • Complete this huge project at work by September in a timely fashion.
  • Also need to start saving and make plans to see relatives in Nigeria. By 2020 I should have accrued max vacation time that would allow me to do that. Gotta get my Nigerian passport renewed :francis:
4. Just living life to the fullest

Feel free to ask away. The bolded above cripples a lot of people when it comes to opportunities. You don't know if you don't know.

The bolded is me to the the T.

I need to make my Nigeria move ASAP. I haven't been to Lagos in like 4 years :sadcam:. There's been so much change going on and I need to be on ground to see what's good. I was in Abuja this May but Abuja ain't on the levels of Lagos. I was meant to go to Nigeria this Christmas but I was BSing off something serious :francis:

Man i got 2 opportunities with my current company. One here in Atlanta and one in Dallas

Both are gonna be close in salary, im thinking about relocating, maybe a fresh start could take me to another level

A new city can definitely be a new start. Just make sure you leave behind the old habits.

Have companies ever come across as too desperate to you?

A company messaged me on LinkedIn about a job. We set up a phone interview for Monday. And then just a few hours later, she emails me about coming in to meet some people on Tuesday.

How Japan’s prime minister plans to cope with daunting demography

Could Japan be the next spot for work, especially in the IT sector?

Go there, secure a bag and come back stateside.

If Abe (Japan's PM) does look to bring in that many workers, then the comp plan would need to be competitive to entice people to work in a very niche society that has very low diversity.

Yep. Gotten it plenty of times. Tends to be in Sales type roles or in firms that have been hemorrhaged for talent.

Snapchat felt like that. But I think I was meant to be a diversity hire :mjpls:. My personal taste isn't too move quickly though. I like a week between steps, at least.
