Question: Have men lost a step concerning work/career etc or is that women are just getting more opportunities in the work place and are hence are more visible?

Context:

So I went to dinner last night with a very good friend to catch up. She talked about work (Consultant at EY) and of her investment research into real-estate and what not. She mentioned she was looking to also develop and app to make money on the side. She also went on about a book club she started and the progress she made there.

Overall, I was quite impressed with all the work she had done.

Today, I was moving through LinkedIn to browse jobs, and I saw this Nigerian lady who's startup was featured on Forbes 60 Exciting Women owned startup companies etc.

I saw this and reflected on what I've been seeing recently and it seems like women, especially in the black community, are the front runners in the business sphere. I wondered what might be the cause(s). Could it be there's simply a national "push" to give women more visibility, or is that men have regressed? Could it also be that men are more "lowkey" and don't broadcast as much women do? Women do tend to be more social in groups that men.

I graduated college about 2 years ago and even then I noticed it was women, on balance, that secured jobs well before graduation. Dudes always took some time to get things secured. Could it be that women take better to instruction/direction? I know for a fact that you can tell a group of men to do X and at least half of them will question X and will prefer to do Y or Z?

Genuinely curious.

How far out do you guys project out your finances and/goals? Is it odd for me to be budget/forecasting my income in the first 1-2 quarters of 2019? :lupe:

If I were to sum up my year financially I'd give my self a B-, maybe even a C+

Where I did well was in the fact that I paid for almost everything in cash. I did not acquire any debt for consumer purchases. I also paid off about 35% of the little debt I had. Where I did mess up was in getting "new debt" in the form of speeding tickets (anyone lives around DC knows that the city is just one giant speed camera trap :francis:).

I also didn't do much by way of investing and I didn't hit some of my savings goals. From about April till now, my spending did bulge a bit but then again, I did a lot of traveling in that time period.

Seeing as 2019 is pretty much here, I've begun planning for next year. Biggest things for me are:

1. New job with at least 20% more what I'm making now.
2. No debt by Mar 1st 2019.
3. Increase my savings from 3 months to about 5 months of expenses by July 2019 (Economists are predicting a recession)
4. Use my tax refund for a holiday in Brazil/Colombia or South Africa (a young breh still gotta live :ld:)
5. About $3k - $4k in various investment schemes (401k, Roth IRA etc) by mid-August 2019.

There are some other goals that I'm still working towards and still are a bit fuzzy in terms of timing. One big one is a side money and passive income. I think technology is the future as far as side income is concerned. I've been thinking of apps or even possibly a forum similar to the Coli but targeted towards the Nigerian diaspora market. I know there's Nairaland and Linda Ikeji but their layouts, particularly Nairaland, isn't the best. The Coli and LSA have very good UXs.

My pivot to Nigeria may not be ideal for end of 2019 but more so early 2020. Ideally I'd like to go to the country with at least $10k of solid capital and a corporate gig in either Lagos or Abuja. From there, I can start putting capital to work on different ventures. Lord knows Nigeria is a country you don't want to quickly run to without a solid plan. Heck, you can even go with a plan and still get chewed out :snoop:.

Been talking with a lot of my close friends and there really comes a point in time where the phrase "I want to be X when I grow up" no longer holds weight. I'm 23 now. I've grown up. My choices are starting to have a lot more weight.

Put a young breh on some good advice.

The signs and writings are on the wall

1. My sister got a full time offer for Investment Banking with Goldman Sachs but she turned it down for Bain and Company
2. My friend at EY wants to move to their ATL office because the DC office isn't "real consulting"
3. My father called me about some of his former employees that are thinking about coming to the US for MBAs and other Master degree programs.
4. One of my co-workers just put in his 2 week notice and is about to get 95k base + 5% commission
5. Former colleague reached out to me about an Investor relations position that just opened up

It's time for my next pivot.

Any brehs/brehettes in here with a CFA?

My pops mentioned possibly trying to get CFA level 1 just to up my profile. He mentioned even getting one of the levels should put me in a more competitive position even if I don't plan on going through all 3 levels. At first I was hesitant, but seeing as I'm not doing too much else with my time, I was wondering if I could study for it and take it come December.

I know with Level 2 and 3 you have to take them once a year in June. June 2019 is when I plan on taking my 2nd GMAT so I won't be able to study for both exams. However, there's about 3 months between now and the next Level 1 test.

EDIT: Deadline has passed.

Might get on this team permanently. I'm still torn on what to do. Meagre pay increase, more hours, more responsibility, more bullshyt, greatly deceased opportunities for freedom. Is the title change worth it all? I'm just not seeing it :franchit:.

First time on this section of the board; just want to rant a bit...

WHITE CAC WOMEN IN THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ARE THEE WORST!!!

Currently a GS-14, step 3 in the DMV area. I've had these devils try to report me as AWOL while I was on lunch, report me for having headphones on at my desk, demand desk audits for my promotions, undermine my authority, and I just had to file my 2nd EEO complaint in the past year!!

:martin:

Tired of this s***!

This weekend I'm looking to knock out a good 10 - 12 applications. By end of October I'd like to start interviewing for new companies. My time here is up, no growth in my role, especially on the skills side and I definitely do not want to pigeon hole myself. Nigeria beckons me but before then I need to get my house in order.

Part of that is more money :manny:

Need to come to Nigeria with like 10-15 bands to really get this entrepreneurship popping.
