Just bombed a technical interview. Didn't realize it was going to be so Linux and AWS heavy.

Surprisingly, I did better with the AWS questions than the linux ones. But they got progressively harder until I had no context to even guess.

The salary range didn't match those questions at all. 80 - 100k. Smh

Shangri-La
So while I was on maternity leave our regional CEO stepped down/was forced out after only two years in part because he had the company buy this recruiting platform that’s actually awful.

so he tried to take a project from me but he keeps getting hella negative feedback from everyone on his projects lol

How important is a degree for cyber security? Am I playing myself going another route?

I don’t have a choice until I get my skills up. Salaries seem to be down. I won’t accept anything less than 100k.

There have been a couple of jobs that pay more, but those have been few and far between.

Yeah breh it's ugly out here. I've never seen the market like this in 14 years of being a professional

Who the hell has on-site interviews for tech roles in 2024? I'm pretty sure the last time I had an on-site interview was in 2019.

Meanwhile, yesterday I had the final interview for the remote role I talked about in my last posts. It was with an engineering manager and more conversational than the previous ones. It actually made me to feel better about the job.

So in 2024 certs can still get it done :jbhmm: good to know breh.
Do yourself a favor and really dig into if it's something you want to do. Cybersecurity is a hard to get into field because the people doing the hiring have no idea what they are doing. If you are working somewhere that has a Cybersecurity team, talk to them to see how you can work your way onto the team. You'll have a much easier time transitioning internally.

Not gonna lie, im going in as green as possible looking for a career change. I do work at a tech company which sparked the idea. So it’s harder to get into than your other it fields?

Some of the requirements that these places ask for entry level positions is insane. And to make matters worst, most places are trying to offshore as many positions as possible because they don't want to pay the appropriate wages for the position. These are requirements for a jr cybersecurity threat analysis position posted on Indeed:
  • 1-2 years’ experience in Cyber Security or related technical fields.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Cyber Security engineering, or equivalent demonstrated experience and knowledge.
  • Keen ability to troubleshoot technical and security problems
  • Broad technical security knowledge of networking, and Windows and Linux operating systems
  • Programming / shell scripting experience (PowerShell, Python, Java, shell scripts, etc.) desired
  • Azure and/or AWS cloud experience a plus
  • Experience as a Windows or Linux System and/or Network Administrator a plus
  • Working knowledge of technical security solutions (Firewalls, NIDS, HIDS, OSSEC, SIEM, Antivirus, Antispam, MFA, etc.) a plus
  • 24x7 NOC / SOC experience, experience working with or for a MSSP/MSP desired
  • Curiosity and strong desire to constantly learn
  • Customer-oriented focus with a strong interest to satisfy our customers
  • Requirement for on-call work and working in a 24x7 environment
  • Routing and networking TCP/IP protocols such as SMTP, HTTP, POP3, IMAP
To me a jr/entry level position should not require both experience and a degree let alone all the other stuff they are asking for. Especially since the pay is going to be minimal. And this is only one of the problems with the field. Not trying to dissuade you or anyone else from trying to get in, I love the field and wouldn't want to do anything else. I just hate how gate kept it is and how they constantly lie about the US not having enough talent :camby: :camby: :camby: :camby:

My younger bro got an Associates in something that escapes me. But, he spent a year invested in getting different Cyber Security Certs and got his foot in the door with a Company. Kid stays studying up on stuff and getting additional certs all the time. If it's something your really interested in then I would say a degree won't hurt. But, definitely get the Certs and try to get on early so you can build up some work in the field.
