Coli 6 Figure Gang need some advice:

I’m thinking of switching up my commute to work. Thinking of taking the train (bus + train actually) into work instead of driving. Been trying to list the pros and cons. Appreciate a different perspective.

Pros:

  • More “me” time. I get to read while on the train since I don’t have to focus on the road. Newspapers, books, magazines etc
  • More networking opportunities since I’ll be moving through the city (DC).
  • Less wear and tear on my car which is already on 185k miles (looking to hold it until about this time next year before I upgrade to something else).
  • Better “scheduled”. Using public transport requires good scheduling if you want to make it work on time etc
  • I get in some more exercise. About 1 mile walking a day between all my transfers and walking to work.

Cons:

  • The biggest one: Doubles my commute time from about 70-90 mins round trip to close to 180 mins round trip. I don’t mind the long journey to work since all I do once I wake up is prepare for work. It’s the return trip back. On the days I go to the gym after work I won’t be getting home until like 9:15 pm
  • More expensive. Even with my company’s metro subsidy, if I were to take the train every day, I’d still probably pay about $60 more a month on transportation even though I would drive a lot less and spend less on gas. I could also do a half driving/half train thing

Essentially, I’m looking to take my game to the “next” level concerning my career, finances and general wellbeing. I’m looking to get more time back for myself and I think having my commute as “me” time could be really beneficial.

Any thoughts… :feedme:

This is the biggest thing for me. An additional mile of walking each day should be pretty good. :ehh:

I find it much easier to not touc my savings when I have a goal in mind.

E.g. Once I bought my plane ticket for vacation and I began counting down the days it was like a switch in my head went off.

The "pressure" was on.

I'm gonna use that strategy for general savings/investing.

I have my paycheck direct deposited into my savings and I only transfer out what I'll need for the month. Since I can only transfer out 6 times per month and I use 2 of those to pay bills, I have to make an informed decision on how much I'll allow myself to bullshyt away during the month.

I have a portion of my paycheck directly deposited into my savings as well. My issue has been not BSing and dipping into the savings when not necessary.

When I have travel plans it's like that discipline just gets fired in.

I guess it's because of the time I travelled to Malaysia and was short on funds.

I had to borrow money from my boys. After that I vowed never to travel and be left dry.

Is it still considered living paycheck to paycheck if you deposit 30-35% of your income into savings/investments and the rest of your income just gets you by your expenses for the month.

Ex.

You make $5,000 a month. You set up your direct deposit to put $1,750 into you savings immediately and the rest into your checking. Then you use the remaining $3,250 for bills and discretionary spending after which you have maybe like $20 at the end of the month.

Is that example still considered living paycheck to paycheck?

Asking for a friend.

I've been reading Dave Ramsey's "Total Money Makeover".

Some very good gems in there that he's dropped in there. Some principles I really do agree with, like avoiding credit like the plague.

Things like car notes are just things I don't believe in.

having been on several interview panels to interview both intern-level hires and full time hires recently, here are some random things i have to share, some are obvious others arent:

1) show up on time.
2) dont ramble
3) dress well, dont wear cologne
4) answering "looking for a new challenge" or "looking for new opportunities" to the "why do u wana work here" question is stupid and lazy. my place of employment has a mission statement.. if a candidate mentioned it even casually they were basically almost guaranteed consideration for getting hired
5) circling back to a mission statement/goal in other answers is a huge plus.
6) resumes weren't necessary to bring, at least with us. we trashed all of them immediately (cuz we already have them). letters of recommendation are useful if u havent already submitted them. what helps is a portfolio (a candidate for a data scientist position brought samples of the dashboards/reports he created, huge plus). try showing whatever u have during the interview, dont save it for the end like "oh btw heres my portfolio".. we never looked at shyt if it wasnt showed during the interview.
7) dont wear cologne.
8) dont wear cologne.
9) asking "is there anything about me that makes u think i wouldnt be good for this job" is awkward and weird.
10) one person asked what we liked about working here, which was different and scored well
11) on a question like "what do u need to have a successful work environment" people always say generic shyt like communication/teamwork etc. one person answered something like "aside from the obvious ones like communication and teamwork" then listed off shyt like integrity etc.

basically say different shyt, it makes u stand out. show that u researched the company even a little bit, also makes u stand out

i interviewed 40 candidates in 2 days and after the first 10 or so on each day the interviewers start to zone out and every answer seems repetitive and generic. when someone says something different, people notice.

Had an interview with this company and it seems like a good opportunity. The woman talked my ear off and she seemed like the typical scatter-brained white lady that has a bunch of ideas and implements them not fully knowing the outcome. The whole "thinking outside of the box" spiel. Reporting practices are a mess, no formal request system and a team full of "critical thinkers" with no technical skill to help complete reporting requests. A million and three data sources. Then on top of this mess this lady is still trying to implement new solutions.

The only problem was the pay. It was LOW...but she was saying she didn't want pay to stop her from finding the right talent. I'm going to type up a proposal for her based on our conversation and the worst she can say is no. I did like the company, newer facility, and the overall location is pretty nice and it's close to a Wegmans LMAO!

Is it normal for jobs to skip out on interviews. Today was the second company that set up a skype interview with me and never called.
Normal for them to change the time of the call or even day but to not call at all and say nothing about it being cancelled isn't.
