I got ppl on my LinkedIn feed saying they got laid off from Google then the odd post with people claiming to be starting with Google today. So strange.

Dude got an automated message that his account was going to be locked out. 16 years and that’s how they drop you.

When things turn around these companies will have to step up compensation and ppl will be negotiating termination packages before signing an offer.

Also will see many look to get away from tech companies. Too volatile. But these tech companies won’t have a hard time finding ppl but don’t underestimate genZ they’re not the type to take it in the chin and forget about it like the boomers and gen xers.

At least that’s how I see it.

Im nusr talking big tech layoff post, in particular how dirty Google did folks
Google did people dirty but at least the compensation package looks decent from what I have seen. A few years ago my company did something similar and gave people pretty much nothing. That's why you shouldn't be loyal to these companies :manny:

All I know is that I’m about to make that pivot from studying data engineering to ML engineering. I have pretty decent grasp on machine learning right now. My current daily tasks revolve around data engineering.

Is there software you're already familiar with that has a ML component? It may help to start there, since you already have base knowledge. For example, Qlik has a ML learning component, but the company I work for doesn't use the software robustly enough to utilize it. It's something I plan to familiarize myself with and I think a lot more BI technologies, if they haven't done so already will offer it.

I'd focus on taking a general course on Udemy or Linkedin just to get well versed in the terms and concepts (assuming you aren't), and then that will help you look at how you can do things in the context of your current role, assuming you aren't trying to do a full pivot. Because how you look at ML ultimately depends on your role

i.e. DS vs Product vs Engineer, etc.

Someone in TLR replied I was being "flippant" because I basically said focus on your own skills/knowledge/goals and don't be so fearful about layoffs. Those kind of comments irritate me and they shouldn't , but what's so wrong with not allowing what's happening outside of your control to consume you?

I mean I use scikit learn. I know my applied machine learning class uses tensor flow at some point, but I’m not there yet.

And I hear you on not using certain skill sets robustly.

That’s apart of the reason why I’m not completely worried about tech jobs going away too quickly because there’s a lot of companies that have a long way to before they fully modernize. I wouldn’t be too far off base if I admitted that there’s still large companies using technology that’s a couple decades dated at this point.
