What's your current career and/or career aspirations?:jbhmm:
Currently a Software Engineer, looking to become a Software Architect before too long. Not sure that I want to move into management as I like the design process and the technical side. I'm sort of in RnD right now and I'd like to stay there, but we'll see what happens.

A few months back, I set up a meeting with my boss (with data) to discuss how I was underpaid by about $4K relative to the industry average and my job description had suffered from scope creep over the years. My boss said that HR unfortunately doesn't allow raises without job title changes but she would work on it to get me more money.

Fast forward to today and my boss let me know that they are making me a Senior Reporting Analyst. Normally this would be a cause for celebration, but the thing is.... They still haven't told me exactly what my salary change will be. My boss knows that I want more money, but I never technically gave a number outside of referencing the industry average as a parity number. However, a Senior Reporting Analyst role averages ~$30K more than my current salary.

I am in this weird position where I don't know what to expect anymore. Previously, I wanted to be compensated in line with the industry average, but now, the new job title brings new salary expectations. I'm preparing myself for coming in below the industry average as a Senior Reporting Analyst.

Anyone have any similar experiences or insights?

I asked my old employer for a promotion and/or raise but eventually ended up quitting. These things almost never workout unless you're white. Smartest decision I ever made was leaving my old employer for a bigger salary.

As it should. cant let them pay you less than market value.

Just do your due diligence and be prepared when they make you an offer, if you feel its low do your best to get them to come up.

Hired a new woman last Tuesday and it’s been a rocky first week, but things are looking up. I talk a lot of shyt about the military but it’ll teach you how to follow directions, lead when called upon, and be real with yourself aka allow others to hold you accountable.

My driver was late on a couple loads. Caused us to lose out on 2 more bc she was overstepping her boundaries, tryna negotiate with the dispatcher when she don’t know how to run the numbers on a load. And brought her problems (unpaid bills) to me and the dispatcher. Talking bout if we can’t give her an advance she’ll be evicted at midnight. If I told my boss that he’d be on my ass about how I need to budget better. And the cac wouldn’t be lying:ehh:

Then had the nerve to act like those are our problems too:gucci:i had to let her know at my job, my LT/CAPT don’t wanna hear no excuses, he just needs my black ass at work on time and do what I need to do. People don’t give a damn about me, I just work there. She calling me mad bc she claim the dispatcher “disrespected her” when in actuality he got a job to do as well. That’s why I’m paying him. And if she fcking up I want him to respect her enough to tell her. That’s the name of the game when you working for someone:manny:

This woman 30 years old and wanna argue back and forth:unimpressed:but today is a new week brehs. I’m excited to wake up in the morning :mjlit:

"Prepare for what you have faith in" - my colleague and college buddy

Don't wait until you get the interview to start prepping for the material :wow:

The job search is very interesting. You can plug away at it for 2-3 months without a single follow up email, and then in the blink of an eye, BOOM! You're speaking directly with a recruiter and your formally being interviewed.

Got my phone screen/interview with a recruiter tomorrow at a large professional services/consulting firm tomorrow. Should be pretty lowkey for the most part but I'm going to take a 40 min walk and talk through my experience/resume just to get my story down tight. Standard interview process is about 6-8 weeks so hopefully I can end this decade with a new role and then have my eyes fully set on my Nigeria/Africa pivot.

I also have a few other roles in the pipeline so let's see how that goes. I've been networking like a mad man. I'm even hit brehs up on the Coli with my resume. That Naija hustle mentality :wow:

My job is so bogus. Monday is either a telework or RDO (regular day off) for most people in the building. It's probably about 10% of the workforce in the building, if that. The building manager sends an email that there will be a fire drill in 20 minutes. Dude then sends a second email talking about the fire drill was a success and every got on in 3 minutes and 12 seconds. :heh: Legit NO one in there, but I bet he's going to add that to his bragging rights.

shyt is really starting to annoy me. Everyone praises my manager, but he is booty to me. He provides zero direction, yet shuts down suggestions when I do go on my own. I'm like, which is it, breh? Then we have to do dumb shyt like log these "tickets", which is just a sharepoint site, of every person you've "helped" for the day. The division the person called from is a required field :russ: so you have to look them up or remember to ask every time. 2 minutes of ticket logging for 5 minutes of work. I don't do that shyt.

Today he tells me I need to reach out to "someone in IT, I guess" to make sure your contact information is updated in the system. That sounds managerial, but cool, I'm on it...but not right now.

why and how is that information useful to you bro? :heh:

Something I’ve seen in Corp America at least in my firm, is that senior leadership has a certain profile that is implicit for going far.

It encompasses education, work experience and “fit”. Part of that “fit” is being a family person. All of the men in senior leadership have wives and kids. It is what it is. Certain people get groomed for upper management, and the people doing the grooming will often look to groom people who look like them.

That’s why in part, black people have a tough time cracking into the C-Suite in the US. The people that would prep them for that role don’t really look like them at all.

My department head has his “inner circle” of people who get the promotions and high profile assignments. The people in his inner circle perform well, yes, but there’s politics involved as well.

Rising up the corp ladder isn’t just about doing your work well, but aligning yourself with people that are also rising high. As they rise, they’ll pull you up as well.

It’s like working for a conservative think-thank but reporting to one of the few liberal directors. That director may not go as far, and as a result, you can’t advance all that much (at least underneath them). I’m not looking to rise here, but it’s just something to keep in the back of my mind.

Anyway, doesn’t matter to me, but it just makes sense considering that everytime people have just casually asked if he was dating someone he always kind of changed the subject. Of course, it’s no one’s business but significant others are something people talk about in the office.
