That shyt is the reason you have all these suburban soft ass rappers today. That is the reason that you have the Drakes, Tyga, Kid Cudi etc. Had 50 won that sales battle on Sept.11 2007 the streets would be more represented in hiphop today. The record labels threw their money behind the suburban shyt once Kanye sold more records than Curtis. That shyt drastically changed the climate in hiphop. I think people bought the graduation album just to see 50 retire like he said he would if he lost the bet.

50 was repping that street shyt huh? But the first single off Curtis was "Amusement Park" one of the most embarrassingly bad mainstream singles in rap history:mjlol:

first of all Hip Hop aint "wack" right now
you muthafukkas CHOOSE to listen and pay attention to this bullshyt instead of actively going out on the goddamn internet and finding some real rap shyt

That's the one shyt I realized watching this whole shyt go down. Cats will lock themselves in a closet then complain about the lack of space. There's a BUNCH of dope shyt out there with soundcloud and youtube you can find all types of new shyt, but they'll take what the corporations give then complain about it.....and this fascination with the "streets" is wild too

mchammer, vanilla ice, kid n play (well respected) already won this battle damn near 30yrs ago.

back in they day they said puffy selling a bunch or records changed the game for worse....
they said nelly changed the game for worse...
they said dr dre and them was pushed as representation of blacks being ignorant and that being authentic....
people blamed jay-z for destroying the game late 90's-early 2G.

i'm 29....things come/go in waves. but social media makes it so you don't need to rely on a "hood pass" to rap and open to more people. You can go direct to consumer to find your niche and you don't have this collective hood mentality as the filter system....consumers can filter now in days and find like-minded individuals to engage with. it's a gift/curse.....

Every decade needs a highly talented mainstream gangsta rapper. Rap game's too soft nowadays and it's like there's something missing :francis:

We need a DMX, 50, Ice Cube type rapper to come through and crush the buildings, if they can end Drake's career in the process that would be a plus.

It's the reason why Drake is so big in the first place. The game lacks a big time gangsta rapper to check that fakkit :birdman:

50 was going to fall regardless. He turned into a one dimensional artist who got juice off all the surrounding aspects of music besides the actual music..such as beefs...making fun of rapper's sales...etc

He became a cornball basically....people wanted to see him fall off because he was an a$$hole..not because he beat the odds...

And musically he began to decline... I always thought pre Get Rich 50 was the best 50... But when he signed to Aftermath his flow changed and it wasn't as good as it was one Power Of The Dollar..

Get rich or die tryin is the most overrated album ever..musically. I still respect the album and even own the unopened vinyl...because 50's backstory is one for the books.. But

If jadakiss made those some songs it wouldn't have sold as much. Period.

It's not about the music it's about who's music it is..always the way it has been

It got worse with Massacre, which was a terrible album that only old as much as it did because of Interscope's packaging and promotion and gimmick

Kanye is one of the greatest things to happen to rap, and one of the worst also..

Greatest because he showed black kids that you can be yourself and still be loved and respected. No need to act like a gangster hungry for acceptance

Worst because he opened the doors for a lot of these hipster new black culture swag faq ass bytch nikkas who will sell their grandmother's 24K gold watch for a Supreme hat...nikkas who's heroes are european try hards who have done nothing for the black community...Travis Scott and Ian Connor are among the fakkits Kanye opened the door for...fakkits who have no identity or culture...Kind of black folks Complex Mag loves

Eager for this generation of soft ass hipster nikkas to end. But I don't necessarily want uncut street nikkas to be the majority again. People love to glorify when real nikkas were dominant in hip hop but forget about the cost

The women who lost her hearing that night when the Shyne/Diddy shooting happened...her and many others are innocent victims of the same ghetto ignorance nikkas over glorify

Should be medium ground. Kind of like Jay-Z

I'll pose a politician question. Is Hip Hop better today than it was 6 years ago?
I'll play. What was so goddamn special about 6 years ago? The truth is the genre of Hip Hop has the same ratio as any Popular music genre in terms of quality. A specific year or time period has nothing to do with it.

The truth is, there are so many projects out there to be discovered, I doubt anyone can truly RATE a specific year anymore. Because no one has the time to shuffle all through this music. Maybe when they had 10 projects out a year in 1990 we could do that.. But those years are gone and they are never coming back.

You can rate a year in Hip Hop but if all that is measured is success of that artist, audience acceptance, chatty gossip, I can see why a lot of artists arent even ranked

But Run the Jewels was far more innovative/creative and energetic for the culture. And the proof is when you see RTJ at the festival lineup. They hit a nerve that major artist is right now shaking their head how to bite this and capitalize off it. The problem is, you have to really know your shyt to do a clone of RTJ.
