Yup. Most people don't want to be perceived as being jerks, even if they are a jerk. This is why much of the most effective product marketing appeals to surface level perceptions of goodness or caring. It's why we have oil and gas companies running climate change ads. It's why white people who don't give a shyt about black civil rights will gladly give $20 to BLM. "Soft bigotry" has been replaced by overt, in your face bigotry and meanness. Most people haven't even met or seen a trans person. But if they did meet one, regardless of how they feel about the issue, they'd probably use that person's preferred pronouns in public just to avoid looking bad, and to avoid confrontation. Add in many adults have children who are accepting of the issue and you've got large groups of people who simply...don't want to be perceived as jerks, even if they are one.

So the only people who get excited or animated about hating on such a small minority of people end up being the super hardcore right wingers who spend way too much time online (and/or watching Fox). And when they introduce that weirdo shyt to normal people there's a disconnect. You would think every block in America has trans kids on it. Or every HS in America teaches critical race theory (none do lol). Or that normal people sit around calling abortion or gay people "demonic." You'd prob have more success talking to a normal 50 year old woman about Westside Gunn than this shyt.
