People get way too attached to their own picks, especially if they turn out not to suck. 9 times out of 10, a GM will chose the guy he picked over the guy he inherited. It's why GM's like picking their own coaches even if the coach that's already there isn't necessarily a bum.

And if you know you have to choose one player over the other, other teams will know that and try to lowball the shyt outta you because they know the last thing you want is to continue with something that won't work.
