As long as its true to the autobiography then I don't see the issue. I think its good in sense people and young people especially need understand or be reminded about what happened in history and how evil something like slavery is. Not just so we can say that was horrible and feel guilt or shame about the past but so we when see stories of people being mistreated today or in the future in similar fashion we better understand the evils of the institution and not stand for it.

I would actually really enjoy watching a movie about pre slavery blacks, specifically focusing on tribal relations back in Africa. Doubt that will ever happen though cause it really won't be too compelling to the average viewer so instead we're left with documentaries/literature on the subject.

Closest you'll get is Shaka Zulu, which was quite good....

Thing is that I'm sure the movie will be good. Good actors, good director. I am getting a little sick and tired of African Americans being portrayed as just three things within cinema. Either we're Slaves, Subservient individuals, or thugs. I'm tired of seeing movies like The Goddamn Butler in 2013. And even a movie like that was doctored all to hell to the point it didn't even accurately reflect the life and times of the individual it was based upon. Spike Lee can't even a properly funded predominately black movie made without Kickstarter, which boggles my mind when a movie like Think Like A Man is made on a $12 million dollar budget and grosses $100 million at the box office. That's why I try to make sure I support quality movies with Predominant African American casts. Think Like A Man, The Best Man Holiday, Fruitvale Station, etc.

There's more to our history than slavery. There's more to our AMERICAN history than slavery. There are so many stories to be told bruhs....

I feel u. Why do we always gotta be put in these roles? Its like they are constantly putting us in our place. We only got Will Smith and Denzel playing diverse lead roles. The rest are making comedies and being the 3rd or 5th wheel in some geeky movie. Its a whole lot more to us than slavery. Im tired of all these white artists stealing our slang and everything we come up with. If whites do ignorant ratchet shyt its considered cute or daring. If whites rap (I like white rappers just makin a point) even if its average they become the 2nd coming at some award show like macklemore. We have so much creativity and talent and it always gets pushed to the side. Black people need to stop supporting these c00nish tyler perry movies. Black women need to stop giving passes to these ratchet chicks and ignorant nikkas online and on the street. Cause they think all of us are like that. We need to separate ourselves from the c00ns seriously. And although the mcqueen movie might be good im not supporting it. How many times are we gonna be emasculated servants and tap dancing in movies?

I don't understand why people think this is going to be an "oscar bait" type of film.

Steve McQueen is not a Hollywood director, he's an artist.

It's not that much of a stretch. Shame was crap, but add more narrative/dramatic scope to Hunger and you have something approaching a well-shot Hollywood production. Have you read the reviews? Even if American Hustle or The Wolf of Wall Street outstripped Goodfellas (which they definitely won't), the race would still be a wrap. I haven't seen so many people call a film a masterpiece since No Country For Old Men.

How many movies have there been about the holocaust? Now how many movies have there been that showed true depictions of slavery? Based on the reviews there's really nothing to hate on in the movie at all, yall just don't want to see slavery depicted on the screen period. If the movie does get critical acclaim I can see tons of white people coming out and saying "oh slavery wasn't actually that bad, shyt's exaggerated, etc." Then you're gonna have the other side hating on it like they do here for whatever reason. You can't win either way :snoop:

Uhhhhh.......Gravity?

The race is FAR from over, calm down.

Also, having massive Oscar success isn't the same as being an "Oscar-bait" type of film. Like your example, No Country is definitely NOT Oscar Bait.

:rudy:An 88-minute film of Sandra Bullock floating around panicking in space is not winning Best Picture, no matter what the reviews look like. It'll get nominations, but Cinematography is all it's winning.
