"His case was tried in Washington DC where, as a black man, Northup was prohibited by law from testifying against whites. One of the accused men in turn sued Northup, who had to defend himself in court."

I can't wait to see this shyt. Steve McQueen is carving his niche out as someone who makes really unsettling movies about shyt people don't really want to confront. "Shame" was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time, and it handled the issue of sexual addiction in a very frank way that didn't low key glamorize the main character's lifestyle like most films might have.

And for everybody complaining that the subject matter.........what kind of movie do yall want? A movie like this makes white people confront the fact that slavery was incredibly brutal, and left behind damage that shapes the way we act to this day with attitudes towards whites that are passed down from generation to generation.

Although I can see the backlash now with some folks like "The depiction of slavery was intense. It wasn't that bad........." :beli:

How many great and accurate Hollywood movies about slavery are there? You act like slave movies are coming out all the time.

off top of my head
Roots
Amistad
sankofa
glory

Breh our history started before slavery in America. Unless there is a movie that focuses on that history I won't support it. I'm not saying the movie will not have great performances or it won't win oscars bc it probaby will. I refuse to accept and support movies that focuses on the lowest part of our history while ignoring our highest points.

Where are the movies that tell us of our folklore and ancient literature, where are the movies about our old empires, did we not have those? Why aren't black directors taking that mantle and challenge and showing us that part of our history.

Complain about white people downplaying slavery, brehs.

Complain about a black man making a confronting film about the harsh reality of slavery, brehs.

Complain about said film being loved by critics because they must be either pretentious liberals or filled with white guilt, brehs.

Just don't forget to complain about the inevitable critics who won't love the film for being racists who can't handle the confronting imagery of the film, brehs.

I would actually really enjoy watching a movie about pre slavery blacks, specifically focusing on tribal relations back in Africa. Doubt that will ever happen though cause it really won't be too compelling to the average viewer so instead we're left with documentaries/literature on the subject.
