If the Indians would've beaten the cubs in 2016 this wouldn't matter to me:mjcry:
And we continue to be a farm system for the big boys…

The easiest position to take after someone gets a big contract is to say "they wont live up to it" :wow:

Of course these deals are bad. Nobody is as productive in year 1 as they are in year 8 but they are paying for all the things mentioned above plus just giving their fanbase hope and a reason to buy tickets.

Fans like their team spending money to get better, or at least try. People act like fans clamoring to see someone with 1.5 less WAR because they are cost controlled. A lot of fanbases see what the Mets did and are jealous their owners pocketing money and never try putting a winner on the field :manny:

That's not the issue.
The point is that teams have to consider future roster construction and so how much money you have tied up in a player matters.

And frankly, the Mets are one of THE WORST when it comes to giving players grossly overvalued contracts.
Mike Hampton
Mo Vaughn
David Wright
Johan Santana
Yoenis Cespedes

If this was a Tatis Jr situation the discussion would be different.

The Mets have to figure out what to do with Syndergaard, Conforto, and in a few years with Nimmo. Among other things. If the idea is to win quickly, they're going to have to break that 200M payroll barrier...and possibly by a lot. So potentially having a 30 or 31 year old shortstop eating 34 million dollars of your payroll on the bench or DL could sting a lot down the line if this fails.

For a thing like this the Mets would have been far better off overpaying Lindor for 3 years (who knows, maybe 110-115 million), letting him hit FA again at 30 and taking his chances with someone else.

One championship in the next few years will make the rest of the contract worth it. The Mets have an outside chance at the world series with their pitching and lineup, I like that they are going for it :manny:

Plenty teams dont spend and say they are worried about the future but then are just hoping to get lucky in the future. It's no guarantee but you are doing what you are supposed to do as a team by bringing in as much talent as you can. I'm sure the cleveland baseball team fans arent overly excited about their roster potential the next few years.
