That’s not how it works though.

You don’t just get a boost for playing 2B or SS or CF.

Those positions are valuable. It’s true. Because they tend to see the most opportunities. But you still have to be good.

There’s no one who is a bad centerfielder who suddenly becomes more valuable than a great 1B simply because they play CF.

Kevin Kiermaier might be the best defensive CF in baseball this season. Freddie Freeman is one of the worst this year.

Their WAR values aren’t anything close to one another.
That is how it works. Kim's oWAR is 4.4; Matt Olson's is 4.8 (I'm going off baseball-reference). In no world is Kim even close to as valuable as Olson offensively.

Except maybe he is close to being as valuable.

Candidly that’s the beauty of advanced analysis to begin with.

It’s not here to confirm your biases and eye test.

It’s like when the casual fans lost their minds 15 years ago with Ben Zobrist. Sure. Maybe a guy like Kim doesn’t LOOK like he’s all that valuable because he’s not slugging 40 HR. But if he makes up ground in 7 other ways…that’s how it is. Perception be damned.

He's 28th this year. :unimpressed:

A career year is not the norm for him and it's the only time he's been above 92. :unimpressed:
You say it like 28th is bad. lol
He will likely finish with 100 RBIs again this year and part of the 30/30 club. Would that be another career year or nah?

Swap Kim and Olson. Are the Braves still the best team in baseball? Yes or no.

Considering offense is up across the board because of the rule changes, I'd say he's stagnated or regressed comparing his rankings this year to last.

Stop it. :comeon:

Say Albies retired tomorrow and SD called Atlanta offering Kim for Olson. Atlanta's GM is blocking SD's number on the spot.

It will not be hard to find a replacement for Kim. They are not easily finding a replacement for Olson.

Just like Swanson left and the Braves didn't skip a beat with Arcia taking over short, who's basically a journeyman.

There's still Braves fan that have the opinion that Matt Olson hasn't been a good replacement for Freddie Freeman but Kim is somehow just as valuable just because of an advanced metric? Nah!

I'm not telling you that Kim and Olson are equal.

So this question is foolish.

The premise that was posted was that Kim "was no where near as valuable as Olson"

Well there's a big difference between EQUAL and NO WHERE NEAR AS.

:manny:

But purely from an academic point of view...Kim as a 1B, defensively, probably saves the Braves a lot of runs that Olson gave away...despite his Home Runs.

I get your point but I don't really care about any of that. Just answer the question. Are the Braves still the best team in baseball if you swap Kim and Olson? Yes or no?

None of this is addressing the topic at hand though.

The real question is....how much does Olson's HR hitting make up for his bad defense? And how much does Kim's defense and baserunning make up for his lack of pure HR power?

That's all we're trying to do here.

The problem is, you think this gap is HUGE and the evidence suggests it not that huge at all.
And literally the only argument you have is "defense is overrated"

Well, maybe. Maybe not.
